Greetings. My son and I drew first-season elk tags for Colorado's gmu 49 this year. I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of where in the area I should start scouting.
Thanks.

Welcome! Sounds like a great draw! Also looks like some physical training is in order to hike those elevations.

www.coloradowilderness...ffalo.html

"Beaver, elk, mule deer and one of Colorado's largest herds of bighorn sheep (150 individuals) call the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness home, but human visitors are relatively few, preferring the nearby and more glamorous Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.

Unlike the dramatic sculpted landscape of the Collegiate Peaks immediately west across the Arkansas Valley, Buffalo Peaks contains no deep glaciated valleys and no lakes other than impressive beaver ponds. Gentle forests, extensive meadows, and fewer visitors reward hikers who venture here. Several fine stands of bristle-cone pike grace the area's southerly slopes.

The forest is laced with large meadows and impressive beaver ponds held in place by elaborate dams. Fourmile Creek is a great place for hikers and horse lovers to see these beaver dams and lodges. The peace and quiet of the wilderness is seldom broken here.

Size: 43,410 acres

Elevation: 9,200 to 13,300 feet

Did you see that had interactive maps that also showed game routes?

www.coloradowilderness...areas.html

"NEW! The Colorado DOW now has interactive GMU maps on their website. You can save them to your computer and print them. Find game migration routes, streams, topo information, fishing conditions, trail maps and much more. Best of all, it's FREE!"

I can't get them up on my computer right now. My company software is block it.

mrbill, a hunting companion and I have decided to try and be drawn for elk. I'm a beginner when it comes to hunting elk. I'd be interested in all the techniques you develop in the field if you would be willing to take the time to document your efforts in this post. Anything that could useful as a lesson learned or valued reference.

I know the area well. I have a life long friend with a cabin on Weston Pass and have hunted the area from Antero Junction, Buffalo Peaks, Weston Pass to Mosquito Pass for many years. PM me I I will give you some suggestions.

Hey mrbill, looks like I followed you here from the other site. My previous suggestions still apply. Sounds like skb2706 can really help you out. Good luck!

I'm here to find out about MULEYS in GMU 49. I have had good luck seeing and getting elk, but I have not seen many deer. I usually elk hunt Buffalo Peaks area or Weston Pass. Maybe good deer country is down near Buena Vista? We are hunting second combined Oct. 23 - 31. Any help will be appreciated and I promise to post a report and pic's after the hunt!
