I have a friend whose son is into shooting. The son, a US citizen, has several rifles and pistols and a CCL. He has been accepted at a university in Ontario for a masters program regarding environmental resourses. As part of the deal, he will receive a grant project that involves testing all the steams in Ontario for pollutants. He would like to take his guns with him but is unsure about policies in Canada, especially since he isn't a Canadian citizen. Any advise from you folks up North?

Someone from Canada will have the latest information. The last time I checked, U.S. citizens could not take handguns in Canada. Long guns had to registered prior to entry for a fee of about $50.00 each. Take care..
Joe.

Thanks, Joe. I sort of expect that to be the situation. Though he would probably like to take a defensive weapon with him when he in the wilderness, think it will have to be a big knife.

No handguns period for his need. Not allowed to carry at all. BUT there is nothing to say a long arm say a shotgun or rifle is not legal to carry.

If he really wants to carry, little need in most of the wilderness although cougar sightings are up. A shotgun and a small game license. Is what many do. Ontario its 99.25$ for the calendar year for a non-resident.

When I carry a rifle I always have my small game license, its legal in most of the province to carry anything you want. However some areas have a caliber restriction of 270 and below. And during big game season without a valid tag 22LR only.

Dimitri

Youch! There was a lot of "police" notices in there. Thanks ss!

"Parliament is currently reviewing a Bill to amend the Firearms Act, the portion dealing with registration of non-restricted firearms. ... the registration of non-restricted firearms is still required by law and the day-to-day operations of the Canadian Firearms Program continue as usual."

He would have to contact the Chief Provincial Firearms Officer (CPFO) in Orillia to get a permit for any firearms.

For handguns he needs an invitation to a match/es.

He cannot bring in handguns with a barrel length less than 106mm.
