tcknight, did you make this far. AR-15s typically come in .223/5.56mm, .204, and 6.8 SPC but there are a host of other calibers all the way up to a .50 Beowulf that fit the small frame. This includes calibers based on the WSSM case from 6mm to .358. These later come close to matching similar calibers based on .308 cases.

Accuracy varies like it does in any rifle However, the AR design lends itself to accuracy and is considered on of the most accurate semi-autos out there. My S&W M&P-15 with a 16-inch barrel will achieve 1 MOA with the right ammo. Target versions of the ARs will typically shoot less than 1/2 MOA.

AR-10s are bigger and heavier than the A-15 to accommodate calibers based on the .308 case.

Get ready to have some fun. Buy and inexpensive one (mine was $800) and start learning what you like. I'm also shooting Carbine Action Matches at a local club.

Here was my decision tree for my first AR.

* 5.56mm - its the standard
* 16-inch barrel, collapsible stock - I don't like a heavy feeling gun so I went with the M4 configuration. Most configuration will give you a rifle that weights 6.5 lbs.
* 1:9 twist - you can accurately shoot 55 grain FMJ ammo (the most common and least expensive)
* standard foreguards - the rails are nice but they are all different, have different shapes, usually expensive for the good ones. If you use a sling to shoot with, then consider a free-float or your point of impact and accuracy will be affected. If you don’t use a sling, I found it didn’t make a difference in accuracy. * flat-top – it allows you to use any sight option you want.
* standard front sight/gas block – I went with a flat/pinnacle rail because I thought it would make an obscuration (I’d see it) with my 1.5x scope. Turns out I couldn’t. The standard front sight gives you a good option for back-up iron sights (BUIS)
*standard trigger – its good enough and with a simple mod you can improve it. Once you start shooting and really determine what trigger you would like, then you can spend the $150 to $250 for a customer trigger. Single-stage vs two-stage triggers

There are so many options that your head can spin for weeks on end. Start with the basics, start shooting, then decide what changes you want to make. My first changes were MagPul grips, butstock, and foreguards. The second is a muzzle brake that I’m about to install. AR Muzzle Brake

The most inexpensive way to go is to build your own lower or buy a lower from MidwayUSA when they are on sale (cost around $250). Then pick you upper up on-line or a gun show. A basic M4 upper can be had for $500. My son just bought a Stag Upper with BUIS and Sampson freefloat 4-rail fore guard for $654 including shipping. Stick with reputable companies that have a good track record to start - CMMG, Stag, Rockriver, S&W, DPMS and you should be ok. If your patient, you might even find a complete AR on sale for around $800. That is what I grabbed my S&W M&P 15 for.

Prices on ARs have gone down a lot in the States. It will be interesting to see if the excess of ARs and parts, production output becoming more than demand, will result in a price drop up in your neck of the woods.

I doubt it, we LAG quite abit for price adjustments normally. I've seen US prices on stuff drop like a rock and Canadian prices remain the same. Hence why I buy what I can from the US instead of waiting for prices to adjust here.

Same thing when our dollar started to approach yours, took over a year till they decided they can drop prices (from 1.40$ we went to 1.10$ and have stayed around there to better at 1.04$ at times). And as a whole retail and distributors acted like they did us a big favor giving us 25% off, till too many people realized it was still cheaper to buy directly from the US instead and prices normalized.

The M1A I own I paid at the time 2,400$ CND (I think it was 1,700$ when I checked out US prices at the time), Currently in the US it retails for $1,901.99 at Impact Guns, and yet its current Canadian price went up to $2,875.00. Its officially cheaper to pay the import/export fees (750$), avoid FN Sports ( ) and buy it from the US directly.

The new Timney trigger I put in is sweet. Very nice indeed. No creep and crisp I'm very happy with how it feels.

I put a timney trigger in my new remington r25 .243 and I love it also. I only have about 100 rounds thru the rifle and am still developing loads for it. I got the 58 v-max figured out, now I'm working on the 87 v-max ( like the .400 b.c.). Anyone know of a good starting load for the 87 v-max in .243 with this short 20 inch barrel? I have numerous powders on hand to try. I don't have the Quickload program, which would be useful, and I think this 20 inch barrel would possibly like different powder than 24 or 26 inch barrel rifles.

Those timney triggers are nice. I put one in the 6MM that I built and I like it very much.

I got my son a lower receiver stripped for Christmas than gave him a budget to go build him an AR. He just joined Army ROTC and we wanted to make sure he is one with the tool that will protect him in the future.

He will very quickly become "one" with his rifle mate...they make sure of that. He will do more training and shooting in the first couple of months that he has most likely done in the last few years.


Also, don't expect the issue rifle to be anywhere near the standard of a civilian owned rifle...the military rifle will not be new and has most likely been used by hundreds of guys who didn't really look after it other than a quick pull through after firing. The military rifle will have had untold thousands of blank rounds thru it too, and those things really gum up the works.

Its a Command Arms UPG16 Pistol Grip. It comes with three pairs of interchangable front and back straps. He is 6'5" and has big hands. This grip can be configured to be pretty large, even bigger than Magpul's which is the grip I use.
