I think I might be doing this in reverse, but I had to jump on the deal while it was there. I ordered an H&R BC .45 Colt Carbine this morning online from Davidson's Gallery of Guns. It has a nice checkered walnut stock and case color receiver finish just like it's 45/70 big brother BC, but this only has a 20" barrel. In another post we had been discussing single action revolvers and while looking at Ruger Blackhawks, Vaqueros and USFA revolvers in .45 Colt, I got the idea that it would be nice to have a carbine chambered for the same cartridge. The H&R was on sale for $260, but the sale ended today so I had to jump on it. I didn't really need another rifle, but there was a very strong want factor playing out here. Now I need a new single action .45 Colt revolver to go with it. See this is working out for the best already!

I have had this happen to me also. I bought drill bits before I bought my drill. When I got the urge for a motorcycle but I bought my road leather jacket well before I bought my bike.

I just looked and the price went up by $124 overnight! Glad I jumped when I did.
I'm hoping to put a Williams FP receiver sight on this rifle or something similar. I think I'll need to keep the rear sight as low as possible. While the front sight looks tall, it doesn't have a base and I believe it is dovetailed right into the barrel. I may have a elevation issue with the front sight, but I'll have to see how it works out.

I always like the Williams FP receiver peep sights. Maybe to with their fire sight front and back and then you shouldn't have problems with sight height.

I picked up the BC carbine today, but had a little problem. The Pennsylvania Instant Check System was down for several hours, so even though they had the rifle, I couldn't take it home. The dealer called me three hours later and said it was back up and I could get the gun. Sort of took the Instant right out of the Check System. I was however very pleased with the gun. The walnut stock is gorgeous and the Marble semi-buckhorn sight isn't bad at all.
Why is it when you buy a gun, you always see several more that you want. While at the gun shop I noticed he had a NIB Springfield S.S. Mil-spec .45acp. I haven't seen one of these for sale since the election. The dealer also had a great looking Ruger #3 in 45/70 for $685. So many guns and such a light wallet.

I just added a Williams WGRS receiver sight to my BC carbine.



I made a few measurements to try to determine the ideal front sight height and here's what I come up with. The barrel diameter at the rear sight is 1.1". I measured the height from the top of the barrel to the center of the WGRS sight allowing for it's adjustment range of .4" to .55" above the barrel and so figured the barrel radius of .505" plus the sight height of .4"-.55" and I'll need a front sight height to be between .905" and 1.055" or averaged to .980" as measured from the centerline of the bore to the center of the front sight's bead. The barrel diameter at the front sight is .7", so the radius is .35" and the distance from the top of the barrel to the center of the original front sight is .47", so I end up with a height of .82". To place the front sight in the middle of the rear sights adjustment range, the distance from the centerline of the bore to the center of the bead on the front sight should be .980" or .160" taller than the .820" I have now. Measured from the bottom of the dovetail, the original front sight is .570", the tallest offered be Williams. They do however sell a .250" riser which can be used to add height to the front sight. Given the need for .160" taller than the .570" sight, or .730" I believe the ideal front sight height used in combination with the .250" riser would be .480", but they are only available in either .450" or .500" so I'm thinking the riser plus the .450" sight would be my best bet.
Before I order anything however, I plan to shoot the rifle using the new WGRS sight with the original front sight just to see where the loads I'm using are going to hit.

With all the snow we have been getting the range is snowed in so I haven't been able to shoot it for groups yet. We did have some good melting today after Thursday night's storm, but I see we're in for another snow storm now on Tuesday or Wednesday. I just keep thinking that this can't last forever.
