man I must be a lazy sob when it comes to loading.my rifle is not fussy so I just chuck the bits together and get good results. mixed brass dont bother me at all as I dont need super accuracy when I very seldom shhot at over 200yrds. I did a experament with the 270 on a range over a bench. 110grn 130grn x 3different loads a 140grn a150grn and a160grn to top it off. all bullets hit the target and the whole group could easily be covered with a playing card. I do carry some very accurate loads when Im out hunting incase of a longish rested shot but as most shot will be taken quickly at under 50yrd a 150 grn load goes in when in the bush. my point being I no longer get hung up on super carefull loading as long as it does the biz its fine by me. and before you say it I dont just use factory loads as they are too expensive or im too tight... Consistency is the name of the game when reloading. If your process produces consistent results, its good enough. I got into reloading because I wanted to control the process and achieve more consistent results than I could with factory ammo. Now that ammo is back on the shelves around here, I'm reminded that expense factored into it also.

Not a thing wrong with your way of thinking Elvis......as long as your happy and confident with the results !!!

Got friends that will buy the cheapest things they can get their hands on and throw it together. Funny thing is....they kill deer every year too !!!

I gotta say my loads are generally made from the more economical components. I do like the performance of a boat tail bullet. I have never been able to justify the price of the "super" bullets when I can 3 shots to touch each other. They kill critters clean so no complaints, dead is dead.

I try and make my load consistent as I can too. I don't weigh my cases or really care if I mix brands of cases either. I use 130 grain Nosler Partitions in my 270, 175 grain Grand Slams in my 7mm and 174 grain Sierra's in my 303's. I've found that IMR4831 works very well in all the rifles except the 250/3000 and the 30/30 were I use IMR4064. After I get a rifle to print a load that I can cover with a loonie at 100 yards, I'm happy enough with the load and quit messing with it.

As for the topic, can't go wrong with either the 270 or 308, I just happen to love my 270 and have taken everything from Moose to Bear to deer with it all using the 130 grain bullet.

I tried weighting my cases but didn't find it made a difference in my hunting rifle. Mixing brass, however, limits the true potential of my rifles. I found a difference in point of impact and group size depending on the brass I use. In both my 270 and 308 it was as much as two inch difference at 100 yards. When I'm trying to shoot 200 yards and further, that was significant to me.

You might separate out your already loaded cartridges by brass type and shoot a few groups to see how much of a difference it makes in your guns.

Case weight and manufacturer has an effect (sometimes a lot) on the internal volume of the case. This can increase or decrease pressures to the point that the load has to be adjusted slightly for different cases. My rule of thumb is that for every eight grains difference in case weight it takes one grain of powder to make up for the difference.
If I have two cases that are 3 grains apart after shooting, sizing and trimming then I use .3 - .4 grains more in the lighter case than in the heavy one. That keeps the load attributes the same (most of the time). There are exceptions where I find different cases seem to be just weird enough that the load needs no adjustment - why? I don't have any idea!

Since this seems to have gone from a .270vs .308 since the OP decided to get a 308, and has gone onto talk mostly about ammo.

I just want to ask, is it just me, or have the rest of you noticed that even if you think your ordering the exact same thing time after time, from the same maker no matter whom that is, its different every couple years.

Does not matter if I order Federal or whatever, i generally order enough for myself and a couple friends, then we divide it up, and every time i order, something is very slightly different.
And I never get a straight answer on why.

Is it just a different batch of metal they melted down?

Powders just came from a different region?

Anyone know why ?

Thanks

Manufacturing isn't a perfect science. Machines wear, etc. Stuff happens!

Even their suppliers change or go out of business and they have to have someone else make parts. I've seen plenty of times where you ask two companies to make the same item and the parts end up slightly different.
