Ok, I have a good friend that has had a couple open hearts but he won't quit hunting....Thank God! He loves his old Mod 70 winchester 30 06 and wont shoot anything else. I gave him some Remington Managed recoil loads this year and he dropped two Blacktail with 1 shot each and liked the recoil. Problem is I live in Cali "take all your gun rights away"fornia and its getting expensive to buy. I have been reloading for years and want to try to duplicate the ballistics of Remingtons Managed Recoil 125gr loads. The secret is in the powder. I know the MV is around 2660. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

the lightest load for a 30-06 in the Hodgon website is below.

125 GR. Sierra softpoint
IMR IMR 4007
COL 3.150"
Min load - 55.0 gr
2881 fps
42,500 PSI

There were no light loads in the HuntingNut Reloading Database.

there may be the option to use fillers like some do with cowboy action shooting or those that load BPCR (black power cartridge rifles) when they use smokeless powders and need to keep their case volume full with the powder against the primer. You'ld have to read up on that technique on one of their websites and start with the minimum load and work down.

I'd suggest doing some more web research and start with the minimum load for the powder you have available and see how that worked in his rifle. If that is acceptable, your done.

or get a new .243

H4895 can be reduced to 60% of maximum loadings with no loss off accuracy.... or so the definition says.
This is the powder that I have selected to use for my reduced recoil loads (back problems) I have to get some before I can work the loads up but I will start at the low end and work it up to find a load that my rifles like. I will be using a 150 or 165 grain bullet but I think the Hodgdon powder is better in variable temps and other conditions. It is one of their extreme powders.

I have used trailboss in 308 WIN.
I am sure it can also be used in 30-06

I get my load data from IMR website.

VERY mild load.. hardly any recoil at all.
Accuracy to the minute of goat..
Load strong enough to kill a goat easily, given correct pellet placement.

Added info!

Forgot to add, the reduced load with trailboss is to be used with LEAD cast bullet only!!!
Jacketed bullet may be too high in friction to be used safely!!

Caveat!

The Speer manual #14 has reduced loads for .30-06 but they tend to be in the 1900-2000 ft/sec range. Still worth a look though! Some of the starting loads should get you in the 2600 ft/sec range with a 125 grain bullet.

130grn hp speers hit like a hand grenade. I loaded 125s for a buddy no problems finding load data from manuals they were light on recoil and grouped well.

+1 on the speer loads. I used them after rotator cuff surgery a few years back. Nothing like shooting a 300 WSM with the recoil of a mild 30-30. Very Happy
