If we all thought and acted alike ther would only be one gun! THANK GOD WE ALL HAVE A CHOICE! Sure the new guns the manufacturer's come out with is for you and I to buy new ones. Thats why thay always try to improve the rifles or the cartridgeds thay have! If thay only sold the old or just the one thay would go broke! And I dont think any of us wont that!
When a gun maker comes out with a new cartridge it cost all kinds of money thay have to tool up for rifle production and a huge expence in the cartredge tooling up!!!!!! Not counting R-D to get to the point of actualy saleing an over the counter rifle! Do thay hipe up the new round?
You bet! Look at the 300wby it was develipt in the 40s haw long did that grate round take to cetch on ? Haw long did it take for a magere manufactere to beet it ? Its a huge gamble to go to all the trouble and expence. Just look at the 264 win mag or the 7mm rem mag!
The 7mm 08 is relitivly new, does it do any thing the 308 wont do!!!!????
Was that round brought out so you would buy a new gun? YOU BET!
The list goes on and on.
I belive the gun manufactours do a grate job at trying to keep us all happy.
After all we pay the bills!!

IMHO, and pardon the pun, I personally think the WSM's are a load of crap. It's like they were trying to fix something that wasn't broken. I would stick with the standard chamberings, magnums and ultras.

Allan,

Yes the 338 Lapua costs alot. Once I am back in college we will see a 338 Edge or 338 Lapua is in the books I am thinking.

I gotta say I'm with d-hoffman.
By the way a vast majority of calibers were developed as wildcats by someone other them the major manufacturers. they just buy it up when it does become popular. Except for MR. Weatherby he was on his own.

Coming out with a wild cat is not development!
having a new round work in your gun is one thing , having that same round work in 100,000 guns is a whole different animale all together.
The arms makers arnt stupid! Thay always look at what is the most populer wild cat out there befor jumping in to a new round!
so did the grate roy weatherby. At the time people wonted more gun!
His biggest draw back was powders!
Just like po ackly more gun!

You know, the reasoning behind the short magnums was to improve performance in SHORT actions... They did that, didn't they?

Was I the only one to see this!!!

Manufactures don’t just make something hoping it will sell.
The fact is weather or not you agree with it hunters want them.
Winchester has been listening to what hunters want and they delivered.
Ruger has obviously been listening too with their creation of the RCM line.
Federal has even jumped into the mix.

Everyone wants to focus on what they feel was a failure but here is some info that says otherwise.

Looking at Remington and Winchester factory ammo specs the 300WSM beats the WM in velocity with 150 and 180 grain bullets. (within 100 fps)
Looking at Winchester factory ammo the 7WSM beats the Rem mag hands down.

Browning still list all 4 short mags as being available (left hand included) in most all of their rifle configurations.
Winchester all but the 7WSM. ( they don't list a 7 Rem mag either ??? )
Remington offers the 270 and 300 in a few versions of the 700 and interestingly enough the Model Seven has an 300 option but does not list their own 300 SAUM.
Tikka list the 270 and 300 in all their lines including varmint.
Sako also offers the 270 and 300 in some of their lines.
