According to our class, a CCP only gives you 3 additional rights in my state:
1. You can conceal the weapon.
2. You can carry the weapon loaded, ready to fire.
3. You can carry the weapon in a school.
If someone wants to carry openly they may provided the weapon requires more than 1 mechanical action to fire. They cannot take any gun within 1000ft of any school.
The last one never clicked with me... I do alot of hunting and there is a school set back less than 1000 ft from the road on the way out of our city. I guess I've been committing a felony everytime I drive out of town with a gun in the truck? wow. I wonder how it affects a home owner, if they build a school next to his home. Does he have to get rid of his firearms?
I'm going to send my wife to take the course in the off chance she might take my truck to pick up our boy from school and there might be a gun in it.

I know that in NC a concealed carry permit does NOT allow you to carry a gun on any school grounds. Or as some of us refer to them, "crime enabled zones".
I've seen those "1000 foot" restrictions before and I wonder if they could make it stick if you are driving through or live within the restricted zone. Of course it could still be a lot of grief if someone wanted to cause you problems.

I don't think you will have a problem driving through a School zone or even in the parking lot with your carry weapon. That was not the intent of the law. Just don't take it out of your vehicle or in the school. Just like parking in a Bank parking lot, or a Court House lot. This was brought up in my CCW Class. But every State is different, and every LEO might translate the Laws differently.

Glockman, you hit the real problem right on the head. There is no consistency in the laws from state to state, or even within a state.

And in Springfield, MO. There is a school that has been there for many years and a gun shop just across the street from it that has been there for just a few years...Hummmm....

Well the federal law allows you to "transport" it across a boundary line if there is no other way for you to get to a legal place to use the firearm or onto your own property however you must follow all local and federal transport laws. And this also applies to "private" residences/property as well, but should you violate these laws then you will probably face increased (doubled in IOWA) legal penalties. Now as a "LEGAL" CCW permit holder (I have a non-res Utah permit by the way, which gets me legal in ND and MN for visits to relatives, which is why I got it!) you may not have to follow "those" laws to the letter as there are other laws to cover you.
YOU NEED TO VERIFY THIS FOR YOURSELF!!!! I AM NOT A LAWYER AND ANYTHING I SAY HERE IS NOT TO BE TAKEN AS LEGAL OPINION, AND IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT ANYONE HAS PAID FOR IT.........NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
SO FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF!!!!
And if your work place forbids you having it on you then it may also be same for you to store a "weapon" in your vehicle on company property as well. I should know this but forgot it from the class last year. Each state has it's own rules, laws and codes and this is going to be the way it is as each state has local differences which will dictate how things are are done.
I am OK with this. I have no right to tell folks in Colorado how or where they should CCW, same goes for them to me. But of course we will most likely be very open-minded about it and probably agree on everything! HE HE HE!!!!!
Here in Iowa we are tryig to get things changed to a "shall issue" method with our group IowaCarry.org. We are making ALOT OF NOISE here in Iowa and folks are starting to listen a bit. But as one of our members from our southern neighbor state(MO) says all the time: "It took Muh-zur-ah; twelve years to get a law passed! So don't give up and keep on working towards getting this passed!" I have heard him say this about a dozen times in person so the inflection is true, HA HA HA!!!!!
I have had my Iowa NON-professional permit to carry since I was 22, I am now 36 working towards 37 late summer. I just went in to renew my current non-pro CCW permit last Friday.
You are now going to enter into a WHOLE new world of AWARENESS!!!!
And if you do not then you are not yet ready to have it on you all the time.
I carry whenever possible! And this everything from a .22LR to a 6' S&W M27 N frame in .357RM to my favorite carry rig, the 10mm G29 in a SERPA. Really light but packs a BIG WALLOP!!!
Oh and now this brings up a whole new topic: what style and holtster you will use to CCW with. Method will give you type of holster. See there is no end to this and you just make your head spin! And for those of you who do have permits; YOU NEED TO SPEND TIME IN YOUR JURISDICTION'S LAWS AND CODES TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT VIOLATING ANYTHING!!!! AND THERE ARE LAWS SPECIFIC TO FISH AND GAME HERE IN IOWA WHICH NULLIFY A CCW PERMIT!!!! Make sure you look at EVEYTHING in regards to firearms and "weapons." And follow it TO THE LETTER!!!!! The last thing we need is for a permit holder to get nailed.
Sorry to get so long winded but this is something I really am VERY involved in and I think everyone who is qualified should be involved in it as well. It is really about defending the Right to Keep and Bear Arms here in the USA.
We just did a table for the Iowa Deer and Deer Hunting Classic and it was AWESOME!!!! We had folks from all over stopping by to talk with us.
I know of Ohio, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Alabama, Wisconsin and Illinios! To name a few states who were represented by attendees'.
Well done Mr. DallanC and keep up the fight to be able to protect yourself, your fellow citizens and the country as well. I no longer view my permit to carry in the same light as before I became involved with IC. Now I view it as: it is my RESPONSIBILITY to be prepared to defend all the above as I am able
to within the situation as it presents itself; and the permit just allows me a better set of tools to do just that. Like I said sorry for gettign long winded folks. Arron
