Sighting in your expensive new deer rifle

1. Shiny new, high-powered deer rifle..............$ 1,200.00

2. Quality, high-powered scope........................$ 550.00

3. Bore sighting device.....................................$ 140.00

4. Hospital Visit......................$ 4,893.00

5. Forgetting to remove the bore sighting device prior to actually shooting the damned thing?

Then again.. now with the new barrel configuration, that guy don't need to buy a bipod for that gun.

The accident part is wrong the shooter was ok after probably needing a new change of underwear. Picture got added into the story sometime after the original story went online.

And thus starts another lawsuit against (1) the boresighter manufacturer for not telling everyone to remove the device from the bore before shooting and (2) against the rifle manufacturer for not building a stouter rifle. I'm pretty sure there is a smart ( OK...sleazy) lawyer out there trying to think of how he can include the range owners and the makers of the scope too.

You know, that's a pretty good ad for keeping the muzzles of your rifles taped up when hunting too!

Don't know if I would be too keen on taping the muzzle....but I have used a condom....works real well.

VInce, I've used colored electrical tape, either red or bright green, on my hunting guns for quite a while and have never noticed any ill effects. On my Marlin Guide Gun I even taped over the ports. Not only does it keep junk out of the bore, it also serves as another reminder that the gun is loaded. The only down side I can think of is forgetting to pick up the tape after shooting, leaving trash in the woods.

Condoms (at least, mine) are far too large for the muzzle and that can lead to ripped or torn condoms in the field. Finger cots resemble a condom but are, as the name suggests, sized for the fingers and fit snugly over the barrel without the need for taping. Finger cots are available at any well stocked drug store or pharmacy. Easy to use, relatively inexpensive.

I cut the fingers off of rubber gloves to use on my ML barrel in foul weather. A box of 100 costs around $8.00, so you get 400 pieces to use (the "thumbs" don't seem to work very well).

I, as Pumpkinslinger, have used electrical tape for years. I even tested at the range when I started using this method and saw no noticable change of impact point.
