This was mis-posted to the articles section. Moving it here.

Fellas, I have just got hold of a load of 55 grain V-max heads and am looking to load them up with Varget for fox control in my Remmy 700, 1 in 12 twist. I can’t seem to find any recipes…plenty for lighter V-max and 60 grainer loads etc, but not what I want! Been on the Hodgson and Hornady / V-max sites, but nothing doing…your help and advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Lee.

NOT GOING TO TELL TOU WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAR , BUT ,,,,,,,,,,

I just spent the last 20 minutes or so pouring over my printed library from many different reloading forums on the 223 and 55gr bullet load data submitted by hundreds of shooters accross the nation. Hands down without a doubt you dont see varget in their list of favorites until you hit the 60gr. or heavier bullets . the 4 most widely raved about powders in the 55gr weight class were H335, H332, Win 748 and AA2230 ,,,, there was a random Benchmark and IMR4198 thown in as well . Published data by the bullet and powder manufactures seldom ( but not always ) list the twist rate of the barrel that was used for their tests. This puts you the reloader into the "where to start" ??? position. My personal thought on this would be to consult a powder burn rate chart ( of which several can be found on the web searching under that subject ) and due to the slow twist rate start with the fastest powder of the top 4 I gave you . I shoot a 1 in 8 twist and cant help you with my persol favorites . No quick and easy fix I fear on this one . Good luck and happy fox hunting . 10 SPOT

Gidday Lee. What calibre are you loading mate?

I note that Woods has shown you his results for a 22.250 (great calibre), and 10Spot mentions a .223 (another good calibre).

If you are loading .223 then I have found that 27gn of Varget is a very accurate load with 55gn bullets fired from a 1 in 9 twist .223 Howa.

The load above is .5 gn below maximum (max is 27.5gn and a compressed load), so of course you must start 10% lower and work up the load looking for pressure signs.

Good luck mate.

Cheers, Vince

Lee, you might want to check the actual twist rate for that 22-250 Rem 700 barrel of yours... if you have a good swivelling cleaning rod, it should be easy to find out. I am quite sure Remington made all of them in 1-14 rather than 1-12.

With 1-14, there will be slightly less resistance to the bullet's acceleration through the barrel, so pressures would be ever so slightly lower - which is a good thing. I believe most reload manuals developped their 22-250 data with 1-14 test barrels.

Edit: if mine had 1-12, it would probably do a slightly better job of stabilizing 60gr .224 bullets. Does great with the 52 to 55s though. Not tried the 50s yet.

I have had very good luck with Varget and 55gr. V-Max in my Savage .223. My load is 26.3 gr. which is below max, at .007 off the lands. It is an extremely accurate load. I would sure try Varget in your Remmy. Good luck to you.
