Very Happy For all you leveraction shooters, here's a brand new bullet from Hornady! You can now get better performance without having to worry about pointed bullets in tubular magazines.

Loaded the whole thing...Didn't see anything for reloaders...E-mailed them. Let's see what they say. When and if they answer...

I chamber load pointed bullets and magazine load flat points. One in the chamber (pointed) and three in the tube (flat pointed)...

Hey Bushmaster, What pointed bullet do you use and how does it's POI compare to the rest of the flat points in the tube??

Interesting.....but then in older guns (late 30's early 40's Winchester 30-30) i'm wondering how they would do?

In the days that I didn't have a chronograph I loaded Speer 165 gr flat base soft points. Using the same powder charge as a Speer 170 gr Flat nose. That was using 32 gr of W-748 in Remington cases. CCI 200 primer. And no crimp. The spitzer was hitting about one inch higher then the flat nose at 100 yards.
After I bought my Pact Mod 1 I was loading 110 gr flat base spitzers over 39 gr of W-748 and a CCI 200 primer in Remington cases and no crimp. I was getting 2450 fps from those little baby bullets. Only problem was that they were scattered all over the target. I would imagin that there wasn't enough bearing surface to stablize the 110 gr bullets.
I haven't returned to these test in quite a while as I didn't see any advantage in improving a rifle that did the job that it was intended for when I had rifles that were for longer ranges.
Some of the above information comes from memory and some comes from my load log. UNLESS YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THESE LOADINGS AND THE CHANCE OF LOADING A POINTED BULLET IN A TUBULAR MAGAZINE. DON'T TRY THIS.
For those that do. Remember to check bullet seating depth to insure that you don't cram the spitzer bullet into the rifling.
One of these days I might start testing on this project again. Especially sense they (Hornady) are coming out with a safe pointed bullet for .30-30 Winchester (I don't like Marlins)...

I'm wondering Bushmaster, you think they (Hornady) seat the bullet further and utilize the conical design to aid in doing away with the feeding problems of a lever gun?

10ring, Old boy...Did you go the the site and see what they've done to the bullet that they plan to load in .30-30 cases? I don't know about Marlins, but Winchester thutty-thuttys don't have a feed problem. You can even feed a empty case into the chamber. Flat nose bullets generally are of the same shape if not a gentler ogive to the nose then the spitzer. They just have the point lopped off...

Hey watch the OLD comments. Shooting Wink Yeah, i went to the site and it looked like the bullet was seated further than others i've seen. That's why i said by utilizing the conical design of a spitzer, the angle of the bullet would be less prnoe to getting hung up.

I agree with you on the the Marlins but.... the early Win. 30-30 i've mentioned before does have feeding prob's with Rem 170gr SPCL ammo for some reason? Confused

I see what you mean by the seating depth that they were showing. I bet it is just a shorter forward section of the bullet. True. The conical design of the spitzer bullet may help in keeping it from get hung up in the rifling during chambering. I bet we handloaders can correct that over sight by moving the bullet forward if need be. I may have to go back to the drawing board and get some more flat base spitzer in 165 gr and start over. The advantage of no cantiler is that you can adjust the agive to the rifling, or just short of it...

I have a 1948 Winchester .30 WCF. The only time I ever had a chambering problem was one time when I got stupid. What can I say...I was young then. I've had this Winchester sense I was 18...

Did I offend you by calling you "old boy"...I'm sorry(no I'm not)...

Shocked WOW 1948-18= UROLD Nananana Poke

I just thought i was seeing things and actually looked closely because it just didn't look right from what i'm used to seeing with a 30-30 round. But the round looks very promising (ballistically so), yet it seems a compressed load will be second nature with these, in some powder variants.

Don't know about the other powders, but 32 grs of W-748 only fills the .30-30 case to about 3/4. Plenty of room to boost the round. In some load manuals 32 grs is a maximum charge. Some other manuals really pump it up. I've seen 36 grs of W-748 under a 170 gr bullet. Don't know if I would do that. I'm getting 2150 fps using 32 grs of W-748 under a Speer 170 FNSP. That's right at factory...Because it will hit three rounds inside a three inch red dot at 100 yards I see no reason to try to increase the velosity...

That's right...My Thutty-thutty is 57 years old and still hunted...On the other hand I'm only 62 for two more months. And I'm a far cry from old. I left at 9:00 this morning and have sense then spent 3 hours on horse back workin' the foothills around here, pitched some hay, shoveled out a few stalls, repaired a tractor, enjoyed three beers and came home. Now if that's old...I'll take your place... Cheers
