Nope sorry for the miss under standing was replying to the post right before mine.

Thanks to PointBlank...

A .30-06 in a 6.5 lb rifle would have the same recoil energy as a 9 lb .300 Win Mag.

A .30-06 in a 7.6 lb rifle would have the same recoil velocity as a 9 lb .300 Win Mag.

For calculation purposes I used load info from the Speer #14 manual and 180 grain bullets.

Phill, Either is good - the 06 is more of a good thing with heavier bullets. 180 grainers are the best. I have used both, this last week end actually, and they both do the job.
Camels can be tough as nails or just fall over. I hunt them probably once every 6 weeks or so - not much else available in this neck of the woods. Be prepared for a follow up shot as once they start to run they go a long way quickly even with a good lung shot.
Good luck with your hunt and with whatever calibre you decide on.

Dimitri,
God put Point Blank between my ears, but no computer. Sad

I'm working on it.
Right now I'm heading out to Play Practice.
It's Oliver Twist.
Judy and Hope are in it, and Zach is Oliver.
It's a big community play that has people from all over in it.
I've been helping the guy that they hired to build the set for the past two weeks.
Now the Director wants a gun shot at the end of the show, where the bad guy gets killed.
I'm either going to use .22blanks back stage, or have a period cap and ball gun using a #11 percussion cap with some baby powder just inside the muzzle.
It looks pretty neat when I pull the trigger.

PM me for more details.
This is like Larry the Cable Guy goes Broadway. Very Happy Very Happy

Eric

Why couldn't a 308 Win fire a 200 or 220 grain .308 bullet like the .30-06 can?

IIRC, in the 70s, 308Win was factory loaded in something heavier than 180gr.

There is no reason why it cannot. The issue is, can it do it well?

As an old timer I learned from once told me, "There's no substitute for horsepower."

Heavy bullets are typically not used in 308 Win/7.62 NATO because they don't have enough muzzle velocity in average length barrels to keep up with larger 30 cal cartridges. For instance, the 200 gr SMK over a max load of IMR 3031 gives an average velocity of 2410 fps from a 24 inch barrel. At 1000 yards, the drop on that bullet is bumping up against 470 inches with a 100 yard zero.

The same bullet over 59 gr of H4831 leaves a 24 inch 30-06 barrel at an average velocity of 2586 fps and hits 1000 yards at a point 70 inches higher with 100 fps more velocity.

So, to net it out, with heavier bullets, the 30-06 shoots flatter and faster.

Another factor you might note is that typically, 30-06 factory barrels have a 1:10 twist, while many 308 Win barrels have a 1:11 or 1:12 twist (the spec for the C1A1 calls for 1:12). With the slower twist, the longer (heavier) bullets may not stabilize and thus give lousy accuracy.

I used PointBlank for the ballistics info in this post.

FALPhil, great reply. Thx.

Edit: So then, when it comes down to it, though a .30-06 case can efficiently propel a wide range of bullet weights, each rifle's twist rate will determine which of these bullet weights it will best stabilize.

If the .30-06 twist rate is 1in10 it will better stabilize the 180s, 200s, 220s than a 1in12 .308 would, but the .308 will do slightly better with the 110s, 125s and 150s.

Either one will reliably take all the game in North and South America. I would not feel under gunned at average hunting ranges with either. Think about this: the cartridge that has taken the most big game, including the big bears, in the US and Canada is probably the 30-30 Winchester, a piker compared to either the 308 Win or the 30-06.

My "golf bag" consists of my .30-30 and my .30-06. When I go hunting I take both. That way depending which way I go I pick one for the day. Around here I take the .30-30 most of the time. This area (The Ozarks) is mostly dense oak forests with lots of ground cover and small meadows or parks. The locals call them "glades"...

I'm kind of partial to my 35 Rem these days. Since I quit hunting peanut fields, I cannot remember the last time I shot a deer at over 75 yards.

Calling the bullet manufacture and asking what the optimal velocity of a particular bullet is might be a good idea.

Heavier bullets are typically designed for bigger cartridges.
( not to say they wouldn’t work )

My rule of thumb has always been, anything above the 150 grain bullet go with the 30-06 or 300 mag !!!!!

My personal preference is that I would take the .30-06 hands down in any and all hunting situations over the .308. The .06 just has more power then the .308 with any and all .30 cal bullets period.
