I have a mossberg 500 12gauge pump action shotgun . I need a good deer barrel for it but i also need a good gun for crow and squirrel .it now has a 30'' full choke barrel . my question is should i give it a 24'' all around barrl with interchangeable choke tubes or a 20''slug barrel ?

Howdy. Personaly I would want a slug barrel with rifle sights or a scope. If your 30" barrel is working for the crows and squirrels get a slug barrel. I realy like 24" or 26" shot barrels though. There are alot of 500's out there check the local papers or web sites you could probably find what your looking for used and reasonable.

I agree with Joe. If your 30" suits you for everything else, get a barrel dedicated for slugs. You might even want to think about the cantilevered barrels so you don't have to remove a saddle-type scope mount every time you want to switch barrels.

Now should I buy a barrel with sights already on or install a sight on the vent rib?

If it was me I'd get a dedicated rifled slug barrel. Midway has a 24" rifled barrel for about $150.

I agree a dedicated slug barrel. For less money you can get a smoothbore slug barrel with rifle sights you would have to shoot a rifled slug ( foster type ) you don't get the range or the accuracy you would with a rifled barrel and sabots but there much cheaper to buy ammo for. I have both and seem to shoot the smoothbore more often because rounds are cheaper. There are a few options it just depends on the money you want to spend.

That's what I did with mine. Cantilevered barrel for deer season, and it wears a short smooth barrel (18.5" I think) the rest of the time and is kept close for home defense.
