D,
This is a bit of info on the 416 WSM from another site:

"The case would hold 66 grains of water with a 300 gr Hawk Bullet, delivering over 2700 fps and 5000 FPE at 65,000 psi. AA 2230 would do the trick, without compression.

A deep seated 400 gr Hornady or the like would still leave 52.5 water grains of usable capacity, delivering 2230 fps and 4425 FPE.

Best of all, these velocities are all readily achievable from a 20 inch bbl.

These sound like big numbers, but they are very reasonable. I have worked with the 416 Rem Mag for over 10 years, and driven buckets of 300 gr Hawks 2950 fps using R15 with no pressure problems from a 22 inch bbl. The loss in case capacity going to the WSM works out to a modest 8% drop in velocity when the 3% increase in efficiency is added for the short, fat case.

The 300 gr .416 bullet has the same SD as the 165 gr .308 (.248)and is a legitimate 300 yard proposition. Reduced 300 gr loads will duplicate the 375 H&H at 2550 fps with less recoil. The 400 grainers have a SD of .330 and a TKO of 141, 41% higher than the 375.

The 416 WSM has the same case capacity to bore ratio as the 458 Win Mag, which thrives on AA2230 with no load compression. My 22 inch 458 drives 500 grain bullets over 2200 fps with no pressure problems using 2230."

Swampfox,

Yes I could always neck up the 300WSM (was suggested to me on a couple of other forums) but I have 300 RUM Brass laying around thats why I thought this up using this brass. Smile

I wanted a lower powered 416, if I was going to go higher I'd have went with the 416 Taylor myself. Its actually the Taylor that got me interested in 416/40 caliber rounds. Smile

By the way people can copy this as much or as little as they want, if they did standardize it all I'd ask for is for them to keep the same name. I wouldn't care if they made a fortune if they kept the same name, mainly because it would mean I'd get factory Brass in "416 Canuck" that way. Laughing

Lots of good things have transpired through the endeavoured efforts of wildcatting, and can't help but asking this question on that note.....

What's left to need at this day and age...?

If I were driving a 416 then it be quite possible I'm questing considerable kickass....per that bullet diameter, so a low powered 416 isn't making sense to me as there's much already wildcatted that fit's the bill for less power than a Taylor............

Running a light weight X design would reduce recoil in that caliber, up the velocity, and thusly quite near equal a 416 chambering that possesses more capacity per bone crunching kickass factor.

The best of both worlds and the only end I'd seek in such a project........

Windswalker,

I wanted a large bore heavy bullet traveling at slower speeds. And I DIDN'T know things like the 416 WSM existed when I started this, actually I didn't know much existed past the standard rounds like the Taylor. Laughing

So this is how I came up with this:

I figured I needed a good source of brass, and I have 300RUM cases avalible (my father owns a rifle in that caliber for moose hunting), BUT I knew the case capacity if simply expanded to 416 would be HUGE, so I knew I wanted to shorten the case, so I looked at the other RUM cases, the 7mm and 338, and since the 338RUM was shorter I decided to copy that case to use as a base for my own wildcat, that way I can form it with any of the 3 RUM cases.

And I didn't want to simply expand the neck to hold the 416 round on the RSUM ether, as call me nuts but I don't like the idea of expanding the neck thinning it out, so I decided it will be formed agian using the longer RUM brass but cut back and reformed to suit it, still allowing me to use the supply of brass I have avalible. Smile

So thats the logic in producing this round.

Dimitri

Its on the drawing board, need to get a rifle suitable for conversion before I make it a reality. Smile

Plus I sort of streched my funds thin with the M1A purchase so got to wait alittle more. Very Happy

Opps, I must have forgot to hit enter!

Anyways my 3rd and final revision, between now and this comming spring I'll ether have a varmint rifle or this. Depends if I find a cheaper SAUM M700 action as a donor or not.

So far priced out (without shipping/duties):

Clymer Chamber Reamer - 185$
Clymer Go & No-Go Gages - 100$
Lee Collet Die Set - 50$-150$
Factory Crimp Die - 25$

ER Shaw Barrel hasn't been priced out yet. And not sure if I'll need intermediate forming dies to get from the RUM to the Canuck. Confused

You have to remember, wildcatting may not be productive, produce a superior cartridge, bring you fame and fortune or even be financially sound...it doesn't have to be; it's an interesting exercise and can be just plain fun!

I haven't tried to invent a wildcat, but have worked with several (K-Hornets, 218 Mashburn Bee and the like). Not one would do anything that a factory round couldn't do (and usually better), but who cares? They each had their own charm and quirks. it's trying something different or new that helps keep our sport alive and well.

Good luck on your invention and keep us up to date!

Will be keeping everyone up to date.

Still shopping around for a used M700 thats chambered for the WSM (or possibly a SAUM which I believe they made for a few years). Might end up making this sooner then later. Smile

Dimitri,
Is there going to be enough shoulder to seat on with that design? The way I calculated it is about 1/16". Is that enough to chamber against?

You know, thats a similar issue I found out when I drafted up my 40 SRLH round. Which was a shortened (down to 54mm) 30-06Springfield and necked up to accept a 40cal bullet. This was before I decided to make a short action mag with the RUM brass and using a .416 bullet Smile

My website wrote:
The name is basiclly "40 Caliber" and "Special RimLess Hunter". There is a good reason I've got RimLess in the name. I was playing with the idea of doing the same with the 303 British.

I'm going to assume since apparently there is a .416 WSM wildcat that this should work. How well I don't know but it should work more or less decently enough to work. Confused
