I got a $60 gift card to Cabelas, and I'm looking at getting a chrony. I need some help finding the best one. I figure that whatever a good one costs minus $60 would be a great deal for me. The only problem is that I don't know anything about them other than not to shoot them. Please give me some input here!!!!

Hey Cody

IMO I think it's about what bells and whistles you want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've shot over different brands and models and got the same results each time. They seam to be equal as far as the numbers go.

As far as shooting them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL Thats why I use the Pact model 1. It puts the electronics out of the way.

If you buy this style just remember to keep the unit away from any muzzle blast. I set mine under the shooting bench on a stool.

Here's 2 that cought my eye.....what's the differance? From what I can see, the one has a remote reader? They look like the same chrony, and they have the best reviews of about the 10 or so Cabelas has on their website.

So....what do you think? It gets great reviews, and it seems to be the least troublesome. It's not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either.

I'm still using a Pact Mod 1 I bought 18 years ago. The older ones, like mine, have no bells or whistles...Just 6 different read outs. High, Low, AV, ES, SD & AD...The only ones I find useful are High, Low, AV and ES...

I had a Shooting Chrony for years. It would not always read but I put up with it. The skyscreens are 2 piece or 3 piece and snap together and I had to send off for replacements twice. The plastic wears out where it snaps together. The skyscreen legs are 2 piece and one has a female part that will get looser and looser with lots of use, sorta like....uh-oh, might have mixed company so better watch it! Laughing

Anyway the legs started wearing out and I found a sale on the Pro Chrono for $79.99

wider which makes it harder to shoot, 1 piece legs, 1 piece skyscreens, a big enough screen to read from the bench and hasn't missed a reading yet. But Cabelas doesn't have them so you are on your own.

I never shot mine but I am complaining about the Chrony so you can't say that anymore 221. Very Happy

I have the beta master from Chrony and have only one beef. The instructions seem to be written in english I am not familiar with. Had to read them several times to get my pea brain to understand it. duh

Cody, here are two links to previous discussion on the "Nut" about chronos that should give you plenty of food for thought. Another option is to search HuntingNut for Chronograph and it will bring up plenty of references mate.

One of the nice things about the Chrony is they have a good service program out of Canada. You can do like I did and start with a basic one (Alpha) until you are ready to expand to the other bells and whistles and upgrade. Chrony will let you upgrade to a better more expandable model, or if you buy the middle of the group it is also easy to add on. Example is when I upgraded my Alpha to a Gamma Master, I had to send in my old one and they sent me a new set up and it was around the $120 mark.

I am unfamiliar with other chronograph makes, so Chrony is all I know and it is a pretty simple set up that packs easily into a range bag less the tripod you will need.

Good luck, the other guys have posted some good info and links above as well.

The Pact Model 1 pictured is around 18 to 20 years old. I bought it new and it's still running. Had one minor problem with it and sent it back to Pact. Paid only one way shipping and had it back in two weeks repaired (no cost) with an apology for the inconveniance. That was 5 years ago. Bells and whistles? Hi-vol, Low-vol, AV, ES, SD and AD. If you want a record of that string you will need a pad and pencil. I understand that the new one will interface with your computer, but don't know for sure...All I know is this one has served my needs very well (I know how to write)...

When I bought mine I had to also purchase the bar for the sensors (the red part). I also had to furnish my own tripod (camera kind) which I found at a garage sale for $5.00.

Bushy and I use the same model PAC. Mine is also an old timer. Why this model? Spent a lot of time at the range saw a lot of machines blown to bits by owners and guys they let use the machine. Nothing real expensive is down range on a PAC I and they work like a champ.
