When hunting in Maryland we used to camp out of a converted school bus for the week. Occasionally at night we'd see a powerful light in the area, and sometimes hear a couple of shots. I don't think any of them were ever caught though. It's a sad situation. I'd like to see better newspaper coverage giving the list of fines and punishments imposed. Maybe it would slow this nonsense down a bit. We came upon two guys gutting a moose one year in Ontario in a closed area and turned the guy in. Funny thing is none of the three of us felt even remotely bad about it. I guess some people just find it hard to play by the rules. Best wishes.

here's a thought; Can someone be said to be poaching when all they did was shoot a steel plate irrespective of it's shape it's still a steel plate?

Breaking the law is breaking the law, sometimes there is a fine line, between not breaking the law and breaking it. The old law about shooting from a road was....... 2 steps off the traveled portion of the road is ok to shoot, but one step isn't......now isn't that a joke ? but it was the law. Fish&Game in Vermont use deer decoy's to catch road hunters, shooting from the raod or shooting at a deer on posted land. Then they past a no road hunting law. Meaning you can't drive down any road, spot a deer from that same road and get out and shoot it, doesn't matter if your 10 feet or 100yards from that road. If you saw it from the road driving, it's off limits. If your driving too your deer hunting spot and see a deer at your spot ( say on the farm your hunting ) it should be ok, however you will have to prove the deer was in the spot you were going to hunt. This is were you would want to have written premission to hunt that farm.
This road hunting law is going to cause lot's of headache's.
Entrapment to me is some poor sailor getting to port after a year at sea, meeting a women at the pier, asking for a date. Now thats Entrapment !

I HATE road hunters......!!!!!! For crying out loud...Get out of your vehicle and walk...My pickup is parked in my camp and stays there until I lite it off to go home. If I can hunt on foot then they can. If you are cripled (sorry. An invilid or what ever the "politically correct" word for it is) you don't belong out there any way. To survive in the wilderness requires all your Physical and mental facalties.
Oh I bet this raises some hackles....

Well the only thing I really disagree with is the crippled statement and that "they dont belong there anyway". My wifes grandfather who passed away less than a year ago at 84, went out on his own every year bagged a buck, cleaned it, brought it out... solo. In his younger days he wore off a ton of steel from horse shoes, wore off a cattle herd's worth of shoe leather. The guy grew up tough as nails (first time he ever had indoor plumbing was when he got married at age 34). Someone to truely admire. As he got older he had both knees replaced that seriously reduced his ability to walk and hike... but he didnt let it stop him from hunting and bagging his yearly deer, he just used his pickup more often. I hope when I'm 80+ years old that I'm still able to be hunting be it on a horse or atv.
Hunters prefer different methods. Archers thumb their nose at Rifle hunters, elk Hunters thumb their nose at Antelope hunters, hikers thumb their noses at treestand hunters, Chevy owners thumb their nose at Ford owners... as long as its done in good fun thats fine but really we need less division among ourselves as a body as there are too many people out there that would love to just halt all hunting all together.

By The Way. One of my riding partners is 92. You can't climb on a horse unless you are still fit. We have a ball working coyotes and deer out of brushy dry washes and canyons using horses. If your grandfather was able to hunt on foot at the tender age of mid '80s then he was not a cripple. I don't want to see paved trails in MY mountains. My statement still stands. By the way...I know what the term "Cowboy up" means. After three broken bones. One caused by my own stupidity and two cause by my horses (which could be construed for stupidity also) over the past 40 years. Believe me I know...

You may have raised a few.
Some time ago i was told i had to teach a class of hunters that had a 'disability' or two. Well it turns out they were in deed disabled, and so much as in wheelchairs, and i had to teach an 8 week course on traditional archery. To many, these boys and girls were infact crippled and to make a long story short...at the end of the 8 weeks 80% of the class could shoot under 6" at 30 yards but they all grouped arrows less than 6" at 20 yards.
No, they don't have the physical abilities to walk out in the woods, but i can say when i was in a wheelchair and tried to hunt i was never as proficient, but i could still shoot and had a darn good rest built on to my chair.

Wow Bushy, I reckon you have raised some hackles. I'm with Dallan. I agree with everything you said with the exception of a disabled person (politically correct term in Australia) not belonging in the field hunting. I know of quite a few bikers who have only one leg but still ride, albeit on a trike, but they are still very capable. I have hunted with a guy who could only ride an ATV and again he was capable of doing everything except walking. His ATV was adapted to his needs and had a much more efficient muffler fitted so he was also very quiet. He had a rest fitted which helped him be an excellent shot, better than many I know. So I suppose that he really wasn't disabled, just did things differently.
We also have a Riding for the Disabled Association over here in Oz, where disabled kids are taken on trail rides on horseback. Great therapy for the kids they say, and very humbling for the helpers.
I hope that I am capable of hunting well into my 80's and 90's, damn, I would be a very happy man. Would give me the chance to teach my grandkids about hunting and conservation of the hunting resource.
Cheers, Vince

I don't like road hunting poachers either but If a man has a disibility for what ever reason he has just as much right to there hunting as me. Alot of these guy's must over come horrific obsticals to make this happen they have the passion for the outdoors just like you or i. I admire there ability to overcome a disibilty to keep there passion alive and be in the woods .

In Bushmasters defense I would clarify that under no circumstances should a disability excuse be used to take vehicles of any kind into wilderness areas. They should remain pristene and protected. Anyone caught in them should not only loose their vehicle, but be forced to pay for a helicoptor to air lift them out.
I wish I could afford to get and keep a horse but its sadly now out of my price range. I cant afford to stable one and ground is a rediculous $200,000 per HALF acre now so buying or renting pasture land is laughable. I use and love my quad... but I keep it on legal trails to get me to mt access where its hiking time.

Hi
Speaking AS a disabled guy (not OFFICIALLY - just ACTUALLY - I can't stand up long enough to do my own grocery shopping), I kind of have to say that, if you can figure a way to do the stuff you want to do, and it doesn't RUIN it for others who want to do the same stuff, more power to you and carry on!
However: REAL hunting is about the HUNT, not the kill. I can NOT hunt any more. I still love shooting, and I'm having a great time tweaking up a rifle that will challenge me to be as good as IT is. I've found a way to enjoy myself without having to run a SUV up into the mountains.
(Yeah yeah yeah - a smaller guy would take an ATV. I'd have to take an SUV. So SUE me.)
As for a horse: I LIKE horses. There's NO WAY I'd make some poor big fella lug me up into a hunting area. I'm HUGE!!
(That's a FULL-SIZED keyboard there by my right arm....)
(Note the similarities!)
Count me on the, "no motorized vehicles," end of the argument. There's a lot of ways to skin a cat, though, so your milage may vary.
