Checking to see if anyone loads up there 22-250's with this recipe? Have loaded the 50 grainers up with Varget and H-380 but thought I'd try for alittle better load. Any input? Thanks, Tim

I usually load 50gr to 52 gr Hornady's using WW760 powder that works very well. But I do have a load using Varget that I'm working on.

Thanks Bushmaster, I'm just going to load up some straight from the book and work from there. 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip with 3 different powder loads of IMR 4895. Starting out mid range of 32 grains and loading up from there, half a grain at a time and see where that gets me. Going to use Fed 210M primers and seat all the bullets at 2.35. Once I get something I like I'll check back again. Tim
By the way this site has some awesome info.

I've used 4895 and 4064 in the 22-250 with 55's.
Frankly, H-380 is the best 22-250 powder I've found for 50-55 grainers, so that's all I use any more.

4895 will probably not give you the highest velocity but it may give you accurate loads at reduced velocity. IMR4895 and H4895 are known to have a wide range of uses in most cartridges from the 22 bores all the way up to the big 45 caliber cartridges. There are a couple of rounds that it gives the best velocity in but in most it is too fast to give the highest velocities. They can be loaded to 60% of maximum with little degradation in accuracy and no sensitivity to position of the powder in the case when fired. If there is a single universal powder (there isn't) one of these two would be it.
If you are punching holes in paper 4895 will be a great powder - if you are reaching out a few hundred yards for prairie rats it will leave you a bit short.

Well guys I didn't get much for results with this (also tried with H380) so I'm going to move up to some 55 gr Sierra's SPT's with some 4895. Hope this will work out better. Even went and put a Timney trigger in (is this sweet) but the groups are not there so I'll keep playing around. If any of you guys out there have something that I may try let me know. I'm shooting a heavy barrel Ruger with a 1 in 14 twist. Thanks for the feedback earliar! Tim

Well my load of the 55 grainers with 4895 did not please me so I loaded up some 50 gr Nosler BT's with 34.7 Varget and was pleased with it, 5 shot group had 4 holes touching and 1 I must have pulled. Did load up from that some and the groups started growing so I'll load some down from there. Also loaded up some 52 gr A-Max with 33.2 Varget and was real pleased with this load, as close to a one hole group as I have ever gotten. I then opened a new can of powder with the same load and they opened up some, guess I'll have to work on the powder weight some (still grouping nice though ). One question I have is you guys that are shooting the A-Max's, how are they on coyotes, knock down and hide damage?

I have a browning a-bolt in .22-250 with the boss. The barrel is 22 inches. I hand loaded David Tubb's final finish bore bullets (80 grainers) to polish the bore. After that, I slowly worked up a load of IMR4895 with 55 nosler Ballistic tips .007 from the lands. I shot through a chrony on every worked up load. I couldn't believe the velocity I was getting with low pressure signs. I finally finished with 40.2 grains of powder with a velocity of 4010 fps. Crazy amount of powder for 4895 I'm thinking. After tweaking the boss, it will shoot about .51" . Pressure is unbelievably low considering the amount of powder used in this gun. My brother owns a Remington laminated varmit in .22-250 with a 26 inch barrel and it did not like 4895 at all. Groups were about 1.25" at best and showed a lot of pressure signs with just 36 grains of powder pushing the same bullet. He finally settled with 39.5 grains of H380 with 55 nosler BT and shoots consistent .5". I believe my browning with the 22 inch barrel and the Tubb bore polishing kit reduces my pressure dramitically. This is what my rifle likes so far so that's what it gets. Loving the flat trajectory. Be very careful and watch for pressure signs.

Welcome to HuntingNut leanporker. Grab a beer, pull up a stump and sit awhile.

Have never used 4895, but have heard that is is a pretty good powder with the right calibre/bullet combination.

That is a pretty hot load... in fact its approx 4.7gr over max!! It must be a heavily compressed load as they show 39gr as compressed with a 40gr NOS BT. Hogdon list the following:

55 GR. SPR SP H4895 .224" 35.5gn 3670fps 49,300 CUP

I'd be interested what pressure signs the cartridge displayed.

Cheers, Vince

Me too, cause my manual lists 34.6 gr as max load (3600 fps)with a 55gr bullet and IMR4895 in a 22-250. I have some warm loads that work fine in my 22-250 but that's "HOT" !!!! According to my manual and if speed is your goal, try H414, it is listed as giving the most speed with the 55gr bullet.

By the way welcome leanporker.
