Folks,
I went out this afternoon with a .50 caliber flintlock Lyman Trade Rifle looking for deer. Upon entering the picked cornfield behind my house, I saw a buck. I quickly loaded the rifle and took a 75 yard shot offhand. The ball entered the ribcage and the buck took a dozen steps and dropped. Total elapsed time was about ten minutes from the time I left the house. All ther best...
Gil

Congratulations !! Nothing like doing it with a flinter! I really miss PA's flintlock season, have missed out on it now for two years, maybe next year I will make it back after Christmas for some muzzleloader hunting.

Congrats Gil, I too took my first deer with a muzzle loader on the 27th. It was about a 60 yard shot. .45 cal CVA Magbolt with 195gr Dead Center sabots over 100gr of American Pioneer fffg. Literally ripped that deer right off it's feet, spun it completly around and dropped dead in it's tracks. It barely even twitched when it hit the ground. I was totaly amazed at the knock down power.

Geeze... I'm amazed some of you guys have it so easy! Hunter success in my state is only about 40% ... and thats a single buck per person. 10 min to wander out from your house and shoot a deer is amazing!

So how did you like shooting it with the frontstuffer? I love it... the cloud of smoke, the heavy "push" of the recoil, the huge holes... even loading'em up. Just terrific fun Smile

Flintlock only, open iron sights only, no peeps or optics. Until probably 6-7 years ago only cloth patched round ball was legal but now they allow any projectile. I have a Renegade with a Green Mountain 1-70 twist .54 round ball barrel that I use. I bought it before any projectile was legal and had great success with round ball so I never made the switch to more modern projectiles.

Oh I see. Smile

A side note: You know Flintlocks, matchlocks & wheel locks (both original and reproduction) and pre-1898s manufactured firearms are the only firearms that do not need to be registered cause they are antiques. Smile If I ever see a antique Webley pistol for sale I'm going to buy it without thinking twice. Cool

They are as much work as they are fun...

You gotta fertilize...

you gotta cultivate...

you gotta selective harvest...

you gotta hang and dry...

Vince, I'm curious. What kind of hoops do you have to jump through to get a muzzle loader over there? Here in the US we can order them through the mail, online, etc.
