I just picked up my Lee .41Mag. Die and components for my Blackhawk .41Mag Pistol.

I was looking at the price of factory ammo, and Gander had it at $70.00 a box for Remington 210gr for the .41Mag.
I will be reloading the same or better load for around $4.00 a box.
What a rip off for the poor suckers that don't reload.

I guess that the people that are too afraid, or too lazy to learn how to reload deserve the high price, but it sure seems like a rip off to me.

Might be a rip of but what can you do ??

On a side note, I think ammo prices have alot to do with demand, the less the demand the more its gonna cost to buy a box.

You know if I get the handgun I want (a 1911) in the future its going to be after I get my Remington M700 in 30-06, so when the case neck streach was too much I can cut the 30-06 brass down and form it to suit the 45 ACP. Will make ammo reloading even cheaper. Laughing

I think that you are right D.
The .41Mag isn't the most popular load, so the expense is high.

I sure am glad that I reload.
I just took a break from the reloader.
I'm loading up 21gr of H110, and using 200gr Jacketed Hollow Points.

Wolf's Den Gun Shop has a bag of 250--200gr Jacketed Hollow Point .41Mags for $36.00.
1#of H110 is $16.00, and the primers are only$2.30 per 100.

Adding it all up, I come up with around $8.75 a box, of fairly hot .41Mags.

A tad less than the $70.00 a box that Gander Mountain is charging.

It's not just .41mag that's outragious. I looked at midwayusa for .357mag and they want about $20.00 for cheap rounds up to almost $40.00 for boxes of 50. Even CCI's which can't even be reloaded are almost $20.00. Several brands offer 20 round boxes for mid to upper $20.00 range for premium rounds and don't even think about the rounds they call fang face, frangible. A box of 20 is $32.00.

I just checked the price of 45/70 brass here in my home town, $35 for 50 cases! I near fell over, primers $3 a hundred, H-4895 $20.15, Speer generic bullets $27.25. I suggest you buy all you can now, because this is just the beginning of some super hard times coming. Buy lots of shelf storable stable foods too.

It's our fine treasonous government, trashing the dollar that's the cause of it all.

How would you like to have ammo at the same price as we did in 1968, adjusted, of course, for inflation?

Over the past two decades the spot pricing on copper and lead has declined in terms of actual dollars. More so, when inflation is considered. Copper mines closed all over the SW and some even advanced the opinion that copper would be of no future use. Then along came China's industrialization. And India's. Copper prices go up -- way up. And, so does lead.

The cost of today's brass and bullets, when adjusted for inflation, are slightly higher than in 1968. But, not by much. We've just gotten used to reaping the benefits of the surplus of copper/lead and are shocked now that it is back to higher demand. The spot price on copper/lead zoomed rapidly and didn't give us a chance to adjust. Its probably not over yet either.

We had to raise primer prices today at the store as the new shipment's cost forced Winchester/Remington/Federal to $21.99/M retail. Powder is now up to $19.99 to $21.99, depending on brand. Most industry spokesmen predict several incremental increases for 2008. Stock up now.

I agree with Gil and cast and reload so I can shoot. The days of cheap ammo (except .22 l.r.) are about over. Get what you need and stash it.

It is true that the spot market for copper, brass and lead are going up. On the other hand, there is unused capacity in the production of these metals so the prices do not need to go up so high. Take care...
Joe
