I just read an article about EHD, aka "blue tongue". This article said that some counties in Tennessee and Virginia have lost up to 40% of their deer to this disease in 2007. That concerns me since my state borders on Tennessee.

What is the normal cycle for this disease? Is there any way to control it other than letting it run its natural course?

All I know is that it is carried by midges & has just been confirmed in the UK for the first time - in cattle. No doubt it will hit our deer as well. Crying or Very sad
It's pretty devastating from what I've heard.

I've never heard of this disease before so I decided to Google it. Damn, it sounds pretty bad...especially the bit about no treatment.

EHD

In the above link it only talks about wild ruminants, but English Mike...you say that it may have been confirmed in domestic cattle as well now. It seems that the deer population is well and truly suseptable to it and its quite devastating. Certainly won't do the hunting sports any favours.

I really hope that this virus cannot be passed on to humans...would be most unpleasant if it could.

Cheers, Vince

I do not like the way this is phrased:

"In all probability the virus does not infect humans."

Huh, Excuse me..... wtf

Swampfox,

Probably havn't had time to test to see if they can get it to mutate to infect humans yet and are waiting on the results. Shocked

You're not exactly cheering me up there Big D, I don't want to be a test subject. That's one nasty-azzed virus

What really strikes me funny (if you want to call it that) is that all these diseases have only come out in what, the last 10 years or so. Which kind of coinsides with the big push against hunting by the anti's.

Think about it. If all the animals are getting some sort of disease, we won't want to hunt them. If we stop hunting them then why do we need guns. wtf scared

Um...yep, you are right Ed...just like Avarian Flu !!!!!

You have a point there Hoff. However, I think that there are other more plausible reasons for the upsurge in these diseases being more widespread known. The UN World Health Organisation is becoming more and more active, in both detection of possible health problems and issuing media releases. In addition to this, the media are very opportunistic (is that a word) and quick to grab at any story that is "sensational" and will sell papers.

Actually, Vince, one of my gigs is at the premier disease detection org. The WHO is not getting more active in detection; they are getting more active in publishing other orgs' work and branding it as their own. Their media releases are about 2 days behind everyone else's.

Personally, I don't think anyone at the UN could find their own butt with both hands and a flashlight.

Sorry to get away from the topic here, but I've always wondered about that expression. If both hands are busy searching, where do they hold the flashlight? Shocked wtf Jaw Drop

I'd do it if I was allowed to bring my rifle with me and go hunting (for anything BUT deer) all over the place as the group of voleenteers did their job in Canada/USA & around the world. Laughing

Here's what the BBC has to say about EHD:

Just looked at Wikipedia's site on Blue Tongue and other then the normal "Ohhh Global warming is invovled" hype they spread nowadays it seems its a OLD disease, so just media hype from my point of view, you all might like this:

Quote::
The incubation period is 5–20 days, and all signs usually develop within one month. The mortality rate is normally low, but is high in susceptible breeds of sheep. In cattle and wild ruminants infection is usually asymptomatic (In medicine, a disease is asymptomatic while the patient does not experience any noticeable symptoms.) despite high virus levels in blood.
