I just inherited a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. I don't know a whole lot about this cartridge. The area I hunt is mountain foothills and forested, so my typical shots are under 70 yards, usually closer. This looks like a decent cartridge to hunt deer with where I hunt.

I would like to hear from hunters with experience with the 35 Rem. Anyone out there using it?

I had a .35 before and really liked it. It will do the job on deer. No matter what you use, shot placement is always important. Come to think of it, I do believe I still have some rounds left over.

That sounds like an excellent firearm and calibration for the area you're describing. The .35 will definitely get it done for you

I have an old Remington 141 pump in .35 Rem. Great cartridge for woods hunting. As a group the .35 calibers never achieved the popularity they deserved but the .35 Remington gained quite a following among deer and black bear hunters.

I have a Marlin 336C in 35 Rem and it is a great deer rifle.

Shot a big 8 point with it as he was running away with a 180gr bullet a few years ago. Went through the left ham, broke the leg then ploughed through over three feet of body through the heart and lodged in the chest wall in front of the heart. Did not weigh him initially, but after cleaning, the four quarters alone totaled 125#. I suspect the total weight on the hoof to be a little less than twice that.

The gun will do the job if you will.

He was running away with 180 gr bullet? Good job you shot him Chuck, we don't want them deer arming themselves at our expense Haha

Sorry, couldn't resist, I knew what you really meant.

I have an old Marlin 35 rem with short magazine and it loves the 200gr bullet. Its a very good short range rifle and will reach out to 200 yds with no problem, (If the shooter is able). I have an old Williams reciever sight on mine.

I use a Remington model 760 pump chambered in the .35 remington. Most of my shots are under 60 yards, so it does fantastic. It is a great brush gun. You can hit little branches/brush with it, and it doesn't really seem to affect it. Defiantly not the fastest or largest cartridge out there, but I think it's my favorite as far as deer hunting goes. If I was at longer ranges, I'm sure I would be better off with a 30 caliber load instead.

I have an 1893 Mauser that I converted to 35 Rem using one of Brownell's short-chambered barrels. Three years ago I shot a buck using a handload over one of Hornady's 180 Gr. spire point bullets, and was disappointed with the results - almost no expansion, even going through the lungs and hitting one rib. Last year I shot a 6-pt buck using Hornady's LeveRevolution loads, and the difference was night and day - the bullet expended decisively, dropping that buck in his tracks at about 90 yards. If you can find some (the LeveRevolution stuff has dired up in the Dallas area), give them a try.
