Last year, I was walking at first light, with a one of my hunting buddies, trying to get to a back bowl clear cut, When he say's big deer, big buck, it was a honest 200 plus pound Ontario buck, we are standing 4 feet apart,
he got his gun up, looking through the scope, I was looking with binoculars I can see width past his ears but, not beam height from my angle. He see's height and mass, but not width
and ask if it's early enough to shoot I say Yes, but I can't see tine length.
I didn't want to say take him, without a complete look at his horns.
This screw's him up. Thinking about tine length ?. I drop my Binoculars, put my scope on him, saying if your not going to shoot, I 'll take him. You would of thought we were Bill Jordan or something, talking about if it was a shooter or not. Well bull winkle walks off all 75 yards around a bend, we snap out of it, but too late. It haunt's him and me big time, later that day I shoot a buck that I thought was him accross that same clear cut at sun down, the deer I killed was 12pt 190lb, his first words were nice buck, but the one WE passed on this morning was a lot bigger !, You and your God Dam tine length ! My friend ended up shooting a bruiser 9 day's later a 10pt that dressed 245lb !

Not exactly hunting, but a valuable lesson.
I was playing commando in the palmetto scrub of southern Florida, and I whipped into a patch of cover and sat down. I felt something moving under my right buttock. I moved my canteen, and there was a SNAKE!!!!! Shocked Well, right then, I invented my much admired imitation of the Great Horned Owl rising form the swamp at dusk. I am told it was truly inspiring.
Watch where you put all parts of your anatomy when you are out in the weeds! Sort of hard to put a tourniquet there. Laughing

January, 1979 for me, senior in high school. Sunday morning, 0 degrees, 18" of snow on the ground in Central Kansas. Driving from our farm to church, I noticed a deer laying in the middle of an alfalfa field, about 400 yards off a busy state highway. It would get up, try to walk and fall, get up, try to walk, anyway, you get the picture. My stepdad was a deputy with our local sherrif's dept. and when we picked him up for church, I asked him if there was any car/deer accidents during the night. He said yes, but when the guy got out of the car, the deer was gone. I told him about this one, he contacted the game warden, and I got clearance to get a salvage tag. So I left them at church and headed home to take care of this myself! After I got dressed, I checked my gear, took the .22LR, my knife and was ready. My plan was to drive up to the deer, shoot it twixt the eyes, get home and have it skinned and dressed by the time the folks got home from church! When I get to the field off the highway, the deer is still there, so I 4-wheel out next to it, but the deer obviously was intent on living, not waiting for my coup-de-grace, so it starts to run back towards the highway with 2 back legs broken below the hocks. So what do I do? Leave the pickup running, gun and knife in it, and start off to run down this deer, drag it back to the pickup and shoot it there. Bad plan.

You might be surprised how far and fast a deer with 2 broken legs can run whilst being pursued by a naive country boy intent on doing him harm! Did I mention the deer was 400 yards from the highway? Well he made it 395 yards before I pulled a shoestring tackle and managed to sit on it, with it's head rising up from between my legs! Like I said, it is Sunday morning, right by the busy state highway, and you can imagine what looks I got from the cars that were going by! I tried a couple of times to drag the deer, which by the way was a button buck that weighed about 120 pounds, but it was drag it back 2 steps, and it would drag itself and me forward 3. After about 45 minutes of this deer kicking my tailfeathers, (I was 6'3" and 190# at the time), the folks finally showed up on their way home and bailed me out. By this time, I was soaking wet with sweat, freezing to death, and the deer was no worse for the wear at all.

At any rate, the deer ended up as sausage, and I learned never to under estimate an animals will to live. Took a lot of ribbing at school on Monday, as well as from many of our neighbors!
