Very Happy gotta question, is there anyone here that either sporterizes or builds their own rifles. If so, what are your calibers. If you tell me yours, I'll tell you mine!! Laughing dave

i sporterized a Yugo vz24 but left it in 8mm. Good project. Lot's of fun. Had a little help from a guy with some experience and a few more tools but did nearly all the work myself. Here is the result.

Not sure how they qualify but building/rebuilding/replacing parts on a Savage rifle is pretty simple stuff. I do that.

Buy a cheap Savage bolt rifle at the pawn shop, strip it down to a bare action...basically a donor, buy the custom parts you want and put it together. Requires no specific gunsmithing ability just a basic mechanical sense.

Parts are easy to find, reasonably priced and not difficult to figure out. There is also tons of free help online.

I have built a number of custom rifles and never spent a lot of money. On the other hand, only once did I take a military rifle with a ruined barrel and make a decent sporter. They are as follows:

-Commercial FN Mauser 6mm-284 was bought for $75 and rebarreled with a Douglas #3 barrel in .280 Remington for a cost of $106.00.

-VZ-24 Czech Mauser .30-06 sporter was rebarreled in .257 Robert for just over $100.00

-VZ-24 military Mauser with ruined bore became a.280 Remington, with Fajen stock, Buehler safety, new bolt handle, Redfield base for about $200.

-1903 Springfield sporter with ruined barrel became a .30-06 with a new G.I barrel for about $100.00

-1903-A3 Springfield with a ruined bore became a .280 Remington using a '98 Mauser barrel from Midway (my local gunsmith rethreaded and rechambered the barrel) for about $150.00

-FN Commercial Mauser with a 20' barrel became a .280 Remington using another Midway barrel for about $150.00

I have a hang up for the .280 Remington. All the best...
Gil

vz24 is now a 243 improved with 6-24 mil dot rets,
m93 spanish is a 257 rob./7x57 with iron sights
k.kale turk is now a 8-06 with 4-12 mil dot ret/7x57
vz24 was left as military complete but rechambered to 8-06

yep, that about covers it so far. I want to get about 4 more m98's or some yugo48s for other project.s lots of fun building these. most of the machine and chambering work was done at work when it was slow. made my own 8/300 reamer set up at work . built my own 8mm throat tool .an old gunsmith had given my boss all of his reamers,so my boss gave them to me .the assortment goes from .175" to 2" .gotta get some food down, didn't eat at work today. later ya'll dave Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks for the kudos.

In case anyone hasn't yet realized it, taking that gun you built, harvesting an animal (whitetail in my case), butchering it yourself and then grilling backstraps for the family is one of the ultimate satisfactions.
