I would agree with rrogacki. i think the .270 does shoot flatter then the 30-06 but i also think it's what your comfortable with, all the rifles you mentioned will do great for taking Deer and or Elk. 30-06 is plenty big as we all know. Good Luck on your hunt. Let us know how you do.

About the only advantage .270 has over .30-06 is less felt recoil. The difference in fps is nominal. Maybe just a little flatter, but not much. .30-06 gives you a wider variaty of bullet possibilities that you don't have in the .270. The inability to use heaver bullets is the .270's only drawback. You can't go wrong with either one. Both would be exellent choices. The .270 just can't do the big dangerous game. Yes I know. A .22 LR will kill an elephent too. But I wouldn't want to try it...One of my friends uses the .270 and he takes down deer just as efficiently as I.

Standard cartridges have always done a great job on deer and elk. Whether you choose a 270, 280, 308, 30-06, etal, the more critical matter is the choice of the proper bullet for the job and the proper bullet placement on game.

Federal, Remington and others now offer commerical ammo with premium bullets (Nosler Partition, AccuBond, Barnes, Scirroco) for the larger game as well as their standard bullets for deer/antelope. If you handload, the options are increased even more.

There is a high level of satisfaction with the major brands of rifles. There is a significant price seperation based on brand and model, too, but, in terms of practical shooting the choice is often based on the more subjective aspects of cost, weight, fit and balance.

Welcome to the board and good luck on your next hunt.

I think you should go to Wal-Mart and take a look at the Mossberg 100 ATR available in .243 .270, '06 and .308. They are a light weight gun so recoil could be a factor with the '06. For all around hunting I think I'd go with the .270 like rrogacki and bushy said. They have them (the .270) at the store near me for $244. At that price you could afford a little better scope. A Howa or Savage package might be another way to go.

Good hunting and always, safety first!!!!! I can't stess that enough.
