So does anyone have a home recipe for cast bullet lube? I'll be resizing 2 different weight 44 cal swcs with a Lyman 450 and I don't have any lube. something that will work in the lyman would be nice.

Hey dave, thanks for the offer, but I'm looking to make my own....you know, give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he gets divorced or something like that

I read some place about using 75% beeswax and 25% moly grease...I just cleaned out my lyman and I'm itching to size and lube now

as a follow up, I've decided to ust 3 equil parts of beeswax, parifin wax and lithium grease. it is a little soft so I'll be uping the parifin a bit to firm it out but it seems to do the job it needs to

I am not sure about this but I seem to remember that lithium grease uses lithium fibers to hold the lubricant together in grease. What will lithium fibers do to your barrel under the heat and pressure of firing?
It is a soft element at .6 on the Mohs hardness scale with a melting point of 357 F. The boiling point is 2450 F (approx) so I doubt it will boil away. It might leave a residue in your bore that raises pressure and affects accuracy.
I am wondering if there isn't a better high pressure, high heat, lubricant that can be used.
Just theorizing here - I have no experience and would like updates of your experience as it is available.

Don't know how I missed this thread.

I have been making my own lube for about 20 yrs and it works well. I started off making it for my pistol target loads and have since used it with my 30.30 cast loads.

Anyways, I started off using beeswax and vaseline, but I found that this lube was too greasy. I then tried adding a little high temp axle grease, but again...too greasy. A mate in Sydney did a little research and experimentation and came up with what I am using now. Its a mix of beeswax and automatic transmission fluid (ATF). The ATF softens the beeswax without making it greasy, and it makes the lube a pretty pink colour too. Very Happy Laughing

Unfortunately beeswax doesn't always come in the same purity and consistency so you need to reassess the quantity of ATF to put with it each time, but that isn't a major problem. I melt approx a cup of beeswax and start off with a desertspoon of ATF. The other thing you need to ensure is you must bring the beeswax up to a fairly hot mix...around 130 - 150 deg for the two to mix properly. If you overheat the beeswax and it burns a bit it is still useable, the colour just won't be nice and pink, it will be a brownish colour. Anyway, experiment with different quantities of ATF, checking each mix for a soft enough consistency to go through your sizer without being too soft. I check by spooning out a quantity, allowing it to cool, then once fully set I dig a little out and rub it between my fingers to see if it is "waxy" and of the right consistency for my RCBS Lube Sizer.

Apart from that I don't add anything else to the lube and I find it works for me. Of course, every firearm is different and you may find that yours doesn't like this lube. If so, you have lost very little as both components can be found in most sheds/garages.

Good luck.

Cheers, Vince

The oldest stand-by bullet lube is 50/50 beeswax and Alox.
I don't know if you can still get Alox but if you can it is the lube that has been the best for a lot of years.

I've been useing the before mentioned lube and find that with the loads I've shot so far it has been doing what I need it to do. I'm thinking that the next batch I make will use a little more parifin but I have so much lube right now that I won't have to make more for a very long time. thank you for your input and I'll keep looking back and letting you know how my loads turn out.

Matthew
