.225 Win

Anybody out there shooting a .225 win?
If so what make and model?

Mine is a M70 circa 1965, although, I bought it in 1987 around when the prices on early post64s hit their depreciation bottom. Mine is a sporter weight and, to its credit, very accurate (subMOA) with bullets from 40 to 55gr. Also, from the same seller, I got a 375H&H M70 of the same period.

The 225 was intended to replace the Swift but offered nothing over the original speed king except for the vague promise of longer barrel life. Ironic, then, how the Swift has regained its prominence in spite of all the pretenders to the throne.

A cousin to the 225 Win is the Donaldson Wasp. Case capacities and even cartridge shape are similar. Another cartridge close in performance is the 224 Weatherby Magnum. One thing they share today is scarcity of brass for the reloader and/or the lack of readily available factory ammo. Yet, all of them offer added performance relative to the 223 Rem and are fine cartridges known for accuracy when chambered in well built rifles.

I was just wondering, as I know the Win m70 and I think one Savage model were the only one's ever made.
Intersted in the history of the cal.

I have a custom built "silhouette" sporter, built on a Mauser '98 action, w/ a "Boot's Obermeyer" barrel. (Known for making sniper and tournament barrels).

After I got it, took of the peep sites, had the bolt done, scope mounted, barrel bedded, pretty much redone.

Look for ammo every time I go to a gun show, and usually find a box here and there.
Used to be able to get un-primes brass, but haven't seen any for sale lately.

Been using a "Lee loader" for quite some time, now just found some RCBS for my press.

So anyone else?

If I may stick my nose into your conversation, I would tell you that I saw some .225 brass for sale on the gun brokder auction site just this afternoon. Go to the site and the go to the reloading area and just type in .225 Winchster and that should get you where you need to go. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Wildhorse, I'll check it out.

That was how I found the RCBS loading dies for it, by someone seeing it and letting me know. Had been using a Lee Loader previely.

I realize that this is an old and odd cal., but talking it up once in a while seems to help in finding components and info.

I run a 225 Win in a Martini Cadet. My avitar is the Cadet with its 357 Max 1-14 twist barrel, pop out the 357 barrel and extractor, replace them and it becomes the 225 Martini with a 1-9 twist barrel.

The 225 as you might know is basicly a 22-250 with a rim. The 225 is the basic cartridge for most of JD Jones cartridges in the JDJ series. As a 65k case, it is preferable to the 30-30 as the basis for a cartridge line. It is also the cartridge for Rex Merrill's line of cartridges.

If you have not found them yet you might watch at Lock Stock and Barrel. They carry several die makers full line of dies, including several of the wildcat dies in stock. They normally have the 225 Brass in stock as well.

If you use the 22-250 as a basis for what is or is not workable, the 225 will do just about any chore you need done, from whitetails to crows.

I found 39 new unfired Winchester cases and 21 Winchester O/Fired? I think.
Three of these O/Fired have bullets in them, but no powder or primer.

I know that don't help now, but at least there is some out there somewhere.
