Just thought i'd let you guys know about a new craze sweeping the u.k..............centre fire moderators! Untill recently unless you had a real good reason the only moderator you were allowed was on your rimfire. Now whenever you are out in the woods nearly every deer hunter has a "cac" fitted on the end of their rifle and in fact now all the main manufacturers bringing rifles into the u.k import their rifles already threaded. The reason for the recent policy change on silencers moderators or whatever you like to calll them is that a number of proffessional hunters like myself took the police to court for refusing them and won on the grounds of health and safety in the workplace as they were complaining about hearing loss, after that the police soon realized they werent such aproblem after all as they received less calls from the public who were complaing about shooters! Now beleive it or not they try and make them compulsory when you are starting out as if they always thought they were a good thing.
The other main benefits seem to be you get no muzzle flip so you actually see your bullet strike and you really hear it hit the target which is invaluble when you are taking a shot at a fox 250yds away at night when lamping. It totally removes all doubt whether you hit or not, thus eliminating any wasted time spent looking for a missed annimal! It is also possible to take a number of annimals out of a herd without them realizing and stressing them out too much.
Of course unless you download your ammunition which over here would make it not deer legal (has to be above 2000ft/sec) you still get the supersonic crack which on a .243 or .308 for example sounds virtually no differant to a .22 rimfire high velocity. The added weight on the barrel also seems to have an accurizing effect on the rifle and nearly everyone is amazed at how much better their rifle shoots with the can fitted. It also makes it much more stable to shoot from prone on a bi-pod or from a tree stand or high seat as we call them here.
Would be interesting to hear the opinion you guys from over the pond have on the matter?

Wow... thats actually quite interesting. Were they restricted before the lawsuit? I'd love nothing more than a break / silencer combo on a magnum rifle. Personally I take the kick vs having a break put on it with the added sound issues... but if both could be combined into a single unit, very interesting.

thaks for your reply Dallan,
Before the law suit to get a silencer on a centre fire rifle you had to have a good reason to have one, such as your primary piece of hunting ground was near livestock sensitive to loud bangs! otherwise they considered you may be getting up to all kinds of clandestine things! Eventually they came to their senses and looked at the data which showed not a single gun crime has ever been committed in the uk (apart from the odd suicide) with a liscensed weapon and after the lawsuit they were suddenly realised they are actually a plus as they dont get bugged all the time with people phoning up reporting gunshots only for them to find time and time again it was a legitimate law abiding hunter, thus wasting a great deal of police time and resources.
In the u.k as the police are not armed when a report comes in with anything to do with guns comes in they have to send an armed response team to deal with it as they cant risk sending unarmed bobbies to deal with a potentially armed assailant......i say arm em all!
The silencer has to be put on your gun liscence, basically listed as another firearm and it has to have its own serial no. which is written on your liscence once you make the purchase, just the same as when you purchase the rifle you are allowed. Incientally if you would like to see my firearm cerificate i can scan it and send it to you guys so you can see how much red tape us brits have to go through just to get a gun and go hunting.
With regards to using a silencer on a magnum rifle, my friend has just taken delivery of his .300jarret made by Kenny Jarret himself that had been on order for about 18months, the first thing he did was get a reflex moderator fitted and he says it reduces recoil more than the muzzle break!!, in fact from 200yds away it just sounds like a muffled hiss. There is no loss in velocity at all and if you down load the ammo you only hear the pin drop on the primer.
The 'cans' are about 15in long and in fact come bak down the barrel by about 4in.
Any other questions Dallan dont hesitate to ask
