Hi guys!

I have been wondering if using a new (virgin - unloaded) brass have any different to the recycled "once fired" cases?

I have to date never bought and use new brass. So I never know the differences, beside the fact that the new brass is not yet work hardened and obviously, the "once fired" one fits the chamber better (if it is fired in the same gun).

Any opinion on that thought?

Gelan

Any "opinions"? Now that's a "loaded" question. I have an "opinion"... Very Happy

I have very little "new" brass in my thousands of cleaned, cataloged and stored cases of various calibres (even those that I don't have guns for). I have some .357 magnum (new) and some .30-06 (new). the rest of my cases are in service or once fired cases in storage. Once fired (if you know how to pick them out) are just as good as "new" cases. I am a number one range rat, bar none...I'm the guy on my hands and knees just behind you getting them while they are still hot... wtf so when you step back from the firing line...Be careful and don't step on me. cause I'm :insane:...

I haven't bought factory ammunition sense I started reloading my own. I don't even know what is on the market unless you guys start talkin' about it. Like the Hornady rubber tipped .30-30 rounds. (Rubber tipped...Yer kiddin'. Right?

Don't call me "Duuude". Gelan. Just don't step on me...

Bushmaster,

Sorry but if I'm shooting my rifle you wont be able to get the brass. For you see it sends it flying forward and to the right like any good semi-auto should. Very Happy :-D Very Happy

Once I get myself a bolt gun I'll start reloading, once that happens I'm probably going to be using once fired brass though as its cheaper (read "free"). Smile

Almost all, 99.9%, of my brass is or was new factory brass cause I haven't bought a factory round in many many years. I do have some once fired for a couple of calibers but I also have new brass for them as well. When I buy brass I usually buy in lots of 200 or more. I use diff brass in a specified caliber for diff loads. For exacmple I have winchester and remington brass for my 45-70. In the winchester brass I load 350 gr hornadys and in the remington brass I load 405 gr remington bullets. Also when I start to see signs of case problems, the whole lot is thrown away and replaced with a new lot. Smile

I use mostly once-fired brass that I pick up at the local ranges. Have used new factory brass from time to time. To date, I cannot tell the difference regarding accuracy, only in the acquisition cost. All the best...

Gelan: My weapons have had very few factory rounds through them.

I usually only use new rifle brass, which obviously is not once it is fired, and of the same headstamp. Recently, I got a fair buy on once- fired factory brass for my rifle, which I will dedicate only to varmint loads. I also got lucky with some "once fired" brass for my pistol.

Now, I have about 400 rounds for my rifle, 1,000 "once-fired" .38 Special brass, which I am having a blast Very Happy trying to shoot to failure with +P loads, and about 500 357 maggies, all bought new.

You have to watch what you are doing, especially if you have fairly scarce brass, and are looking at da'Bay.
There are more sharpies than ancient Babyon had whores. "Once fired" there is a relative term.

You can get good used, once fired brass, most usually with the "popular" (military) calibers, .308, 9mm, .223, .45 ACP, and maybe a few others, but, you have to deal with thicker cases, and crimped -in primers, so I think new brass is always a good investment.

Just about everybody that I shoot with calls me Brass Rat, for a very good reason "I AM". Over the years I have accumulated just under 50,000 rds of 40 S&W brass 20,000 rds of 45 acp brass and a uncounted number of 223 brass that just about 2/3 of a garbage full. That is the only brass that I will pick up. All of my other brass mainly Rifle brass is bought by the lot number in lots of 200. Then their weighted and sorted by weight.
