Bushmaster,

To be fair I'm sitting on my desk doing layout work on a small project of mine so I can "beat the clock" so to speak. Smile

Tell me Bushmaster what are your thoughts on carrying a wheel gun for CCW ?? Smile

My thoughts? Let's see...Do I have any? Oh yeah...Thoughts...Good morning Big "D".

In the winter I carry a S&W Mod 19 Combat Magnum with 2 1/2" barrel in a Bianchi high ride thumb break.

In the summer I carry a Firestar 9mmX19 in an in the waist band holster by Kramer.

One should carry what makes you feel good and/or you can handle efficiently with confidence.

Bushmaster,

Thats neat, you hear alot about semi-autos being used as CCW weapons on forums with Americans on them, just dont really hear about Wheel guns much normally you hear that you cant reload them fast enough actually, which is suprising to me anyways that someone would shoot more then 6 shots. Smile

Most gun fights are at less then 10 feet and no more then two shots fired. If any at all. Besides I have a friend that can, with a speed loader, load faster then I can change magazines. Just takes practice, practice and more practice...I'm gettin' better though.

What ever happened to Spacedone? I kinda miss the feller. Not sure why, but...You know.... Very Happy

Spacedone probably got busy with his family for the holidays he'll be back Smile

Thats my thinking Bushmaster, no need for all of them bullets. And I can see why a speed loader would be faster then a magazine change, assuming you want to keep the magazine after you empty it while changing, sort of like a stripper clip for a rifle, I can load much faster with a stripper clip then I've ever seen someone reload a magazine. Smile

Don't you love the smell of woodchips in the morning ?? Smile

I shoot a S&W 686 and a Kimber Gold match in PPC competition that requires a reload after six shots and the time between shot six and shot seven is the same for both guns. It is just what you get used to doing and what your muscle memory can handle. The semi auto is a bit better since you keep the same grip on the gun with the strong hand through out the reload. The right thumb drops the empty mag and the left hand gathers the new mag and slaps it home. The the left hand racks the slide to release ( unless it was a tactical reload with one in the chamber)and the grip is resumed as the gun goes to you eye.

With the wheel gun it is about multitasking. You pop the cylinder release with the right thumb and use the left hand fingers to push the cyliner fully open and invert the gun(barrel pointing up) while the left thumb depresses the ejector rod. At the same time the right hand is grabbing the speedloader from the belt and bringing it up to the cylinder. Now that the empties have cleared the chambers, the left hand tips the gun barrel downrange and the right hand slaps the speedloader home. The left thumb has come to the left side of the cylinder and it pushes it to the latched position (get your fingers out of there first!) while the right hand re grasps the grip and brings the gun to the eye. It is a lot more motions but if they are practiced and fluid they are not slow at all.

Same way with the draw and fire from a holster. It is a practiced learned motion.

Dimitri

Most agree a wheel gun leaves a signature making it harder to conceal, this is where an auto has an advantage. Here's another thought. A wheel gun, unless it's accurized by a competent gun smith, is like having 6 individual guns (6 cylinder). I've had a number of my wheel guns accurized to get decent groupings. It's a matter of proper timing. Not every chamber in a cylinder aligns properly to the throat of the barrel. You may have 3 or 4 decent shots, but, always have fliers coming from one or more chambers. Autos don't suffer from the same problem, but, they too have their own inherent accuracy problems that a good gun smith can cure. I've had only one store bought, off the shelf, wheel gun that grouped well for me & that was a S&W 460. No way to conceal that one, but, one fine gun I must say.

But, like Bushy said, most gun fights we'll become involved with won't be at any distance where MOA accuracy will matter much. Hunting? that's a different matter where you count on accuracy far beyond self defense distances.
Keep it coming...

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I can see everyone here is pretty knowledgable and opinionated, so I'll feel right at home.

I spent some time in Australia, Vince. I was surprised to a Winchester retailer in Sydney over near Circular Quay I believe! When I showed my CCW permit to my friends there, they turned green with envy. Australia is gorgeous and I thoroughly enjoy myself there and it's a damn shame that a certain group of people are starting to dilute it. Hopefully, your government will learn from America's flawed immigration policy...
