Guys I might have been like you at one time, untill I saw with my own eyes the shooters and hunters in this type of chair. They buckle themselves in and ride in the woods, just like a you would on a 4 wheeler.

This is not your grandpaw's wheelchair.

They shoot a deer and rope it up and drag it out, all with the chair.

Ed,

We have three people in the prime of their life and physically fit and skilled stranded and probably dead and will not be found until spring thaw on top of Mount Hood, Oregon.

You really think it's safe to let disabled people even with help into the wilderness? Some of those disabled people are my friends and I do help them at the range and other places, but I wouldn't take them into the mountains to hunt. I have taken them to hunt camp and other camping places where the tourists don't go. But they must stay in camp as where I hunt is too dangerous for them unless they can crawl to a vantage point and stay put until I return.

And you are right. I AM NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT and have never stated that I was a nice guy.

I guess it's perspective and I don't give a rat's *** about being politically correct or a nice guy. My brother-in-law is a guy who spent his entire life hunting and trapping and he almost died in a boating accident in October 3 years ago. Perfectly fit etcetera but wrong situation and a storm came up. A lot of places I hunt are hard to access either in by water or tramping some really heavy growth forest. I don't want to deny anyone the great feeling of being out there and enjoying the hunt, but handicapped, whether loss of limb or sight or whatever is by definition leaving a person with some limitations. I just think there's places where a person can't get to, if they can, like I said more power to them, but meantime....I'm still with Bushy on this one.

A couple of my friends, one is gone now, both missing an arm and oddly enough they were opposite arms. They were also friends and used to say that between them they were a whole man. Anyway they used to hunt with rifles and were very good shots and they field dressed their own deer and would not have it any other way.

Hm, things are sounded a little heated or strained right now.

I will always support the disabled if they want to try something, but there must be limitations consistent with the disability.

I don't believe that Political Correctness....damn I hate that term Mad .... is the correct term to use....I believe that Commonsense is more appropriate.

As I said before....I agree with some points and disagree with others, but Bushy has a very strong argument, one I can't argue with. If able bodied persons can get themselves in the poo, and die, then what chance does a disabled person stand?

I reiterate what I said....I support them, but commonsense must apply.

Cheers, Vince

I don't think anybody is getting heated, (I'm sure not, besides, this topic isn't worth getting heated over) everyone has their own opinion and their own reasons for that opinion. Smile

My son in law is a quadriplegic. He got his antelope this year, his deer the year before, and his elk the year I got mine, and some other critters in between.

He can get from his wheelchair onto the 4 wheeler, and holds his rifle just fine.

None of us with him are hard done by if asked to assist.

Some legally blind people can see, their eyesight is merely below a medically determined standard.

My question is; can they see well enough to differentiate an animal from like-colored surroundings, or a person from other creatures?

The "spotter" should be a "fetcher", and any shooting should be short range.

But , soon, I bet we will see a gunzine article: "Cousin Weakeyes Nails Boone & Crockett Elk at 439.63 yards! The subhead will read;"Says (insert manufacturer's name) laser sight really helped!"

THAT, we can do without.

Of course, politicians will stoop to any level to gain a few votes.

There is no reason a person in a wheelchair can't hunt over a corn field or some other easily accessible area. I am a little concerned about a blind person hunting, but with a competent companion I don't think it is an issue. Everyone seems to forget that the forrests and game lands are not our private property. These lands are owned by the citizens of our country and everyone is entitled to use them.
