Northern Canuck,
My Speer manual shows loads for .311 diameter bullets. Your choice of 150 and 180 grain.
The 180 is listed with these powders:
H414, WW760, IMR 4831, IMR 4350, IMR 4895, IMR 4320, IMR 4064, IMR4198.
What do you use / have on hand / prefer?

I have most of those powders powders on hand. From what I have read though the Savage is actually a .308 not the .311 or .312 as in the 303 British. Quite a bit of dicrepancy on the reloading of this old cartridge.

Northern Canuck, you are right about the .303 Sav. being .308 diameter and don't use 170 gr. .308 load data for it. The .308 load data is about 10 grs. more for the same powders. I have load data for the .303 Savage in an old Lyman 45th. Edition Reloading Manual using IMR powders for the jacketed bullet data in 110, 150, and 170 bullet wts. For more info. pm me and I'll do what I can. Terry.

Since the loads in my book are for the .312 bullets they are of no value to you at all.

Use .308 diameter bullets for the 303 Savage.
A number of years ago, I refurbished a 303 Savage 99 for a friend- including pulling the bullets on some pre WW2 ammo. The case necks were cracking, so I pulled all the bullets and annealed the case necks.
I also measured the factory bullets- they were .308 diameter, according to my mic.
I'd suggest you use 170 grain bullets designed for the 30-30, as they're designed to work at the velocities you can expect from a 303 Savage. And, you can use 30-30 loading data, since the case capacity is similar. I'm sure you're dealing with an old rifle, so I would avoid max loads.
The biggest problem you'll have with a 303 Savage is finding cases- Winchester was the last to make them, and they discontinued them about 1998 or 1999.
One other tip: if you have a 99 Savage, the idea of using pointed bullets is appealing, as you aren't using a tubular magazine that needs flat points. Well, in real life, the pointed bullet idea doesn't work too well. By the time you seat a 150 grain pointed in a 303 Savage case deep enough to feed thru the magazine, the ogive of the bullet is below the case mouth, leaving an ugly opening, and they won't feed worth beans. Stick with the flat points.
FWIW, recent factory W-W ammo loaded with 190 Silvertips chronographed at 1750 fps from the 20" barreled Savage 99 I worked with.

I have recently purchased a 1924 Savage 1899 with a 20" barrel in phenomenal shape. I have messed around with various 150 grain loads with pretty good results but have settled on the load below for all future shooting:
170 grain Partition Round Nose
35 grains Varget
210 Federal Primer
Privi Brass from Graf & Sons
Under 1" groupings at 100 yards (3)
Marbles rear peep with Marble's front bead at .410" height
35 grains is probably the max for this load, I'm able to seat the bullet to the cannelure without heavily compressing the powder. Fired cases show no sign of excessive pressure.
It should be an excellent deer load.
