No, not me, the 30'06!

There is a great article about it in the American Rifleman this month. !00 years old and still gaining in popularity. The number one cartridge in the USA - more popular than any other cartridge and called by all the "experts" the most versatile cartidge in anyone's arsenal.

Is there anyone here who lives in the USA and doesn't own one (at least)?

I admit it - I own two.

PaulS: commemorative rifles by Remington and Ruger pay tribute to the venerable 30-06, and well they should.

The advent of today's powders and bullets have transformed the old warhorse into a cartridge that has few peers. Its better than ever!

I confess.........I don't own one and I never have. ITs not that I don't appreciate it for what it is...its just not my cup of tea. I own bigger guns and I own smaller guns...none of which are neccesary or beyond the capabilities of the 06......its just the way I am.

I LOVE my 30.06!
The 30.06 has been around so long and had thousands of articles written about it, and because of that I think some people feel it is not "sexy" as far as cartridges go. Others that fall prey to this kind of thinking are the .308 Win, 30-30, .280 Rem .257 Roberts. They just don't sound hot like a Lazzeroni Titan or Warbird or even a 300 Rem Ultra mag.--But they still bring home the bacon, veal or whatever you are after just as well or better than many of the newer rounds.

Heck, with todays super premium bullets the .06 can easily handle anything out to 300 or 350 yards (farther for some of you) that we hunt. If I ever need something larger (like in my dreams I hunt Africa every year)I'll get a 340 Weatherby or 416 Rigby.

My Remington 30.06 is one of my favorite and oldest rifles.

I have a Spring field 30-06, it was a wwII springfield that has been redone into a sporter rifle.

it is still heavyier than most deer rifle 30-06.

I actualy just bought this gun a couple of months ago.
it was toss up between this spring field 30-06 or a Savag 30-06.

I am very happy with this one.

The classics never die, all the rest come and go. Cool

The 30-06 is probably one of the most classic rounds and time tested rounds (as well as the 303 British and the 8mm Mauser) Smile

I see no reason why to use anything more then these as they have probably taken together more medium/large game then all the other rounds combined Smile

The 30-06 has killed more game in North America then any other cartrage in the last 100 years and probably has done its job in many other parts of the world. Smile

The 303 British has probably taken more African game then anything else. Smile

While the 8mm has taken its fair share of European game. Smile

Seriously though....I don't own a 30.06, but I have used them on many occasions.....plinking, target shooting, hunting and of course the .30 cal MG when I was in the Army. Had a .30/.50 combo in the turret of my M113....loved them both.

I don't think that there is a calibre that has given so much to the shooting world than the 30.06.....as has been shown in another thread in this forum, it is the base cartridge for many different calibres....truly the most versatile round ever methinks.

I have a Browning Safari semi-auto in 30-06. I reload for it & shoot it quite a bit. I've used it to hunt most everything at one time or another (no birds). I don't feel over or underguned when I hunt with it as there is a load for just about anything you'd go hunting for. Short of an elephant, what can't it kill ? (& yes, it has killed elepahnts, just not what I'd choose to take on an elephant hunt). I would still like to own an M1 Garrand in that caliber, just can't come up with the money.

Count me in. My first caliber larger than a 22 LR was a thuty naught six in a pre-64 Winchester M-70 FW. I took my share of deer with it and still pull it out for a little hunting.

I've heard that many soldiers brought home a love for the 30-06 from their experiences with it in combat. My first .30 however was a .308 and I fell in love with it. I owned several from a Police Sniper Remington 700 to a short barreled Ruger Compact M77, they all shot great. Then one day I stumbled onto a Rem. 721 in 30-06 in great shape and at a great price. Well to shorten the story a might, I recently bought a new rifle and had a choice of either the .308 or 30-06, I chose the 30-06. After 100 years in service or hunting, it's making believers of a whole new group of shooters. There ain't much that can be done with a rifle, that the 30-06 can't do. It's won wars, hunting trophies, 1000 yard matches, and the hearts of many shooters.

Don't forget the diminutive favorite 35 Rem, it's 100 this year too.

I must confess , I actually owned two of them ..

The first was a 760 Remington , that was made into a 338/06 immediately ..

The second was a 742 Remington , that I owned for two days , got in a trade , and used for trading stock ..

The 30/06 has never excited me .. I dont care for sub caliber rifles ...

I like it as well, I have 2 M1 Garands and an old model Ruger 77 in 30/06.
