BigBlue, I can see that having a dominant left eye might not work for you. I don't have that problem. And I never used the two eye open concept until it came up in a discussion among these guys. It does have an advantage & I'm training myself to use both eyes. It's difficult as I haven't used this concept until this year, and I've been shooting for more years than most. I do better with the two eyes open best with low power scopes. I have a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 topped off with a 4X Leupold scope and this combination has been great with both eyes open.
When it comes to high power scopes, I can't use two eyes open, doesn't work well when aiming at great distances.
Keep it coming...

I have 7 varmint rifles, and they are all equiped with 6x18 or 6x24 scopes.
As I get older I appreciated the extra agnification for hunting smaller critters. I'll use 4x12 on my larger calibers for the same reason, but I want a larger picture of the animal I'm shooting at. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

Some say buy what you can afford, and double it. or pay the same you did for the rifle your putting it on...Who knows, Leupold is always a good choice in my book. You can buy last years models for less.

i don't need that big of a scope a simple 3-9X40 (i have a burris fullfield on my 270) will do fine but being so young and still having 20/20's i really don't need large objective rifle scopes nor do i need high magnification but hey those are just my thoughts

Well I'm with PaulS here .. We have been led to believe that bigger is better .. I guess it's because I remember when a variable power scope from most any manufacturer could and would shift POI as you adjusted the power ring .. But , even tho I have one Big Variable ( 3-9x50 Loopy ) , I prefer a low power fixed or low power (1.5-5x) variable .. Buy the best you can afford , with the least power you need is sage advice ..

Better to have a lower power good quality optic than a higher magnification and poor quality. I sure noticed the differance several years ago when I replaced my 12 year old Tasco World class with a Bushnell Elite 4200. Also replaced my K-Mart 10 x 50 binos with the Bushnell Legend (Phase coated etc.) 8 x 42-like night & day.

Not too interested in what the Marines use as they have different issues to deal with.
My own scopes include fixed-power 2x and 4x and variables that go to -9x, -10x, -14x, -18x and -20x. The -18x and -20x scopes are for varmints.
