Vince, that was the reason given in the news. It appears that neither of the men killed, or their families, had any criminal record.

Everybody makes mistakes...
The man in the first report picked his gun back up after putting it down. A shot was dicharged in a struggle over control of the gun. I would have returned fire too, but then I would never make a good cop. I would shoot jay walkers and bicyclists who ran stop signs. (both those acts just bug me. So I'm not a cop)
In the second report there is a conflict in information. The police claim a confrontation and the people in the home claim he was asleep. The cops were outside the home when they fired into the home hitting him and his wife. She was wounded and he was killed. This sounds bad no matter how it went down.
Not making any judgments yet because I don't have all the facts and I don't trust the news accounts.

My biggest concern is that they were taking his property without a trial. That is unlawful and it should never be enforced.
If someone is truly a danger to themselves or others they can be taken to trial and submitted for a psychiatric exam to determine if they are a threat. If they are then they can be judged as such and lose their guns while they are in treatment.
Taking guns away from a crazy person and leaving them on the street only takes the guns out of the future. It will not stop suicide or him from stabbing his mistress to death. The red flag laws don't help the ones who need it and punishes the ones who don't.

Last night our county health dept made it a class B misdemeanor to gather in groups of ten or more.
This morning our governor shot that down.
Maybe there is still a tiny bit of common sense?
I'm not holding my breath.
