In another thread I addressed a safety issue & I guess someone took it personally Sad It got me to thinking about gun storage and I want to see what you folks think, kind of a survey Idea

When you store your rifle, is it with the safety on? Argue Has nothing to do with gun being loaded.
Keep it coming...

The guns in the safes are stored unloaded, safety off and firing pin decocked. The guns on the rack have the actions open and are unloaded. All the best...

On the rack with the actions open? Get kinda dusty don't they, Gil?

All firearms in the gun safe are unloaded except the "Last Chance" .25 Auto. The safeties are OFF and decocked. Firearms out of the safe are concidered loaded (and two are) and the actions are open or safeties ON.

Hunting: When in hunting mode safeties are OFF. When in transit from one site to another and/or slung over my shoulder, safeties are ON

ALL FIREARMS ARE CONCIDERED LOADED IN THIS HOUSE, IN CAMP OR AFIELD BY ALL AND HANDLED ACCORDINGLY...

Yes. I know, George. I went a little farther into this subject then you asked, but I have to be in the woods and field with these guys and I want to feel safe. All must know the rules and all must be on the same page. No differences in gun safety in home or afield...FIREARMS SAFETY IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN THE SHOOTING OF GAME. A successful hunt is a safe one. Remember...You aren't even allowed ONE mistake...Not one!

Thanks guys, we are all in agreement. Smile I'm glad so many are so safety minded. The only thing I do different is with the bolt actions, I remove them from the guns & along with their bolts, store them in the safe. That's because I swab the barrels & do quick inspections a couple times a month.

My first priority in storage is for the tension to be off mainspring. If safety can be engaged in this condition it is engaged. Actually I store a number of my firearms loaded in my safe, but always with tension off mainspring. This is easiest with revolvers but my 1911,AR-15,and mini-14 are all stored with hammer down on empty chamber but with a loaded magazine inserted. The only firearm I store with action open is my 99 Savage as this is when the striker spring is untensioned on a 99.

The guns stored on the racks are really in gun cabinets and dust is not an issue. I just want to verify they are unloaded and uncocked. Just the idle thoughts of an idle fellow. I do have some loaded hideout arms available. All the best...
Gil

My browning cocks the firing pin the second you lift the bolt handle. So keeping it open would be a problem. If I remove the bold from the action it is still cocked.

Whew...Gil. I thought you had them on a pickup rifle rack with the actions open... Very Happy

Unloaded, bolts removed and locked away and I also keep an appropriate lock on each rifle. I still have a young son and the locks are a must.

proper handling is the only time a firearm is safe.
