Me and the woodshed were not friends, but I knew it well.

Mine did the same too. I still feel the pain. Dad's been gone for over 45 years now.

It was "Go to my room" coming from my dad. It was always THE BELT. It worked well to get me to understand that the line between right and wrong was always in place. The adult world was no challenge because I knew the rules.

Having been brought up by a mother born in the slums of Glasgow Scotland in the 1930s, you canoot comprehend just how quick a 5 ft women was in chasing down her errant sons, not the inventiveness of an enraged scotswomen to use every day items as weapons of mass hysteria (the hysteria was on I and my brothers part).
Military belts with steel tips, electric jug cords or hopefully pine wooden spoons with low structural integrity.
Fun times growing up in the 1960s.
If nothing else it instilled into a level of rat cunning and deviousness you otherwise wouldnt have developed if it wasnt essential for a pain free existence. Besudes I had a younger brother and 2 younger sisters to frame if required.
My own kids very rarely got smacked, my elder boy just hated getting into trouble and probably became as cunning as me and didnt get caught, my younger son, well after giving him a hiding that hurt my hand with little effect, and just recieving a defiant glare (he was 2) i figured that to ensure he survived to his 3rd birthday and i stayed out of gaol another approach was needed.
Turns out he didnt like being alone, so into the bathroom to sit on a stool he went, if he played up, got off the stool, emptied the cupboards in the bathroom, screamed etc, he got to stay longer. This was far more effective than physical punishment.
Kids give them boundries and mean it. Give them love and mean it.
Parent hood, where they give you a complex life to nurture, and no instructions on how to do it.
Cheers

it was the wooden harth brush in our household.....the alkathene pipe or supplejack vine came out if it was really serious....by the time our youngest was 6 the govt changed the law which made smacking illegal.....and there I will stop talking as its a VERY sore point in my parenting journey.

They've just voted to ban smacking in Wales.
I guess the next thing is PETA demanding the banning of mother cats from cuffing their kittens when they're doing something dumb.
