I agree this is bad news. One case is one too many. All the best...

Prairie dogs carry the plague. People either play with them or possibly I guess get it from a flea / tick that came off a prairie dog. Its actually not uncommon to find cases of the plague each year. Antibiotics work well against it if treated early enough.
Used to be they were varmints and you could shoot them whenever. Now we have a season for the dumb things to protect them during their breeding season.

I've heard about PD's carrying plague in NM & thus keep a close eye on any bug bites or symptoms afterwards.
Same goes for ticks WRT Lymes' disease.
I'm actually in the middle of a course of antibiotics courtesy of a horsefly bite - damn' red line running up my arm.

Just after the government and church decided that cats were the spawn of Satan and had them all killed. Without predation the rat population exploded and the fleas with them. On the plus side if your ancestors survived the plague then you likely have an immunity to AIDS because they infect the body using the same method.

if memory served me correctly the rats tunneled down into the mass graves so kept it going much longer than it wouldve done otherwise...... either which way it was a horrible time by all accounts...dare I say it??? natures way of controlling an exploding population, its been repeated many times in humans history and some might say we now "interfere" and stop it fixing issue with huge amount of aid being sent overseas to AIDS infected countries allowing even greater explosion of population in an unstainable regeion.... my personal thoughts on the simple fix arent publishable.

Just read some reference that the plague are not spread by fleas or rats, it is airborne disease!!

I know that I believe everything the Washington Post publishes... NOT!
I don't plan on being around anyone with the plague but I would do some research to determine the method of transmission before I believe the Post.
They lie for a living and do so knowing full well that they need to invstigate before they publish but if it makes headlines it doesn't matter whether it's true or not.
