Aloy Mate a red yearling runs 80-100lb/30-40kgs
a big hind maybe 130lb/60kg
a stag my nephew shot 2 days ago went 172kgs gutted
thats why I like the barnes's penetration.

Elvis, when the animals are bigger than roedeer, I put more trust in a bigger caliber... I love the stutzen in 7x57 even like the 7 mm RM, .300 WM and occasionally the .375 H&H, which doesn't mean that I don't like the .22 Hornet for (domestic) fallow deer in someones garden.
I have always liked to have the right tools for the right job, often meaning a caliber somewhat bigger than required...
but this doesn't mean that I would recommend the bigger caliber for young boys... maybe the Parker Hale in 7 mm RM because it has a sweet trigger and weights more than 10 kg, so giving no recoil at all.
So that might be the direction for youngsters: a big caliber in a real heavy gun. A heavy rifle prevents shaking and the big caliber will give the right results when the animal is hit. As for carrying around... that's father's business.

I hear you Mate...my son now on to the .308 so I get my .223 back and he not pinching my .270.
I carry the .223 when Im "just going for a hunt"
the .270 when longer range or biggish animals are expected
and lastly the 7.62x39mm when in the bush or short range is expected.

tlo7mm - How about a 7mm-08 for your son? You can load it to a lower power until your satisfied he can handle it. Great selection of bullet weights as I'm sure you know based on your handle.
