Out here in Australia Arron, when a couple enter into what we call a defacto relationship, after a certain period of time they each have the same legal rights as a state recognised married couple. Sooo, it doesn't really matter what a relationship is called by the couple, they share the same legal rights as a married couple after a period of time.

This will explain it better than I certainly can...

Defacto Relationships

As fa as I am concerned Arron, if you and Jill are happy, and if the kids are happy and looked after, then that is all that matters mate.

What you describe sounds a lot like what is referred to hear as "Common Law Marriage". However, the legal definition of a common law marriage varies from state to state.

I believe what Arron is describing would likely be recognized as common law marriage here, but if they have consulted an attorney practising in their home state they should be good.

Yeah she cooks fairly good. But likes the spices a bit more than my Northern European genetics approve of. But I kinda' like to eat ya' know.

So as was often the case when me and dad were out hunting and stopped for food. We ate again if mom had made food for us.

Some days we were STUFFED TO THE GILLS! But we shut up and ate anyways. Mom did not appreciate us not eating if she cooked. HAHAHAHA

It is kinda' confusing at first, but once ya' hang out around us for awhile it all goes away.

After all this talk about "common law" etc. I started looking around the internet for local laws. Could be we're not legally married (long story). Our 33rd anniversary is coming up in a few weeks! Wink
