I would ask that when we are discussing 4831 that we specify which one. Hogdon H4831 or IMR 4831. They are NOT the same powder....

I'd be willing to bet that the old manuals are talking about the IMR4831. That is the powder I use for most of my rifles actually, including my 270. But I use 130 grain accubonds

Which specific 170 grain projectile and what OAL are you using?

yes it is .270 calibre they very old projectiles.
Ive loaded 52grn AR2213sc/Hodgdon H4831 and loads are fine and group around the 1" mark
found why 15" barrel
top of page has 2 tabs and I was looking in pistol tab...doah

speer fence post (long straight sided round nose) seated to max magazine length
when seating projectiles I cant have die set as normal I have to back it out of press as cant unscrew top enough to get projectile started.

LOL, that does it.. I have no data at all for Speer 0.277 at 170 grains ..

I just checked Speer's website and they no longer list a 170gr. bullet. That may be the reason the powder companies stopped providing load data for it. My 48th edition of Lymans also does not list 170gr. bullet for the .270.
