After many attempts and near misses we finally managed to get all our ducks in a row today.
took Nathan out for a look for a deer, stinking hot and I mean real stinking hot 30 degrees/80ish for you lot Sad
stuff the open tops we were going for bush stalk as I didnt fancy getting fried.
we took note of wind direction and spent hour climbing up a leading ridge before starting to sidle around face of hill, it was nice to get above the crown fern and into nice lush jelly fern..it just screamed deer from moment we dropped into first gut. Nathan got a tad tired so I took point for about half an hour till we hit fresh sign again, we sat and had bite to eat then I gave him back rifle and we carried on, we must have sidled 8-900yards around hill with me thinking a deer had to be there somewhere as we were right on borderline of stag country above and hind country below. we heard a crack up above us just before we crested a spur so got to spur then sat down and had a bite to eat before carrying on. Nathan was mousing along great with me tagging along 10yards behind when I happened to look down and spotted Bambi Very Happy Very Happy quick whistle to lad had him back at my side, I then spotted the big hind facing down hill looking to our left on about a 45 degree angle. Nathan moved to get steady on a tree (cool we cucumber Confused I was plurry near jumping out of skin as could clearly see both animals Scratch ) well he got steady then CLICK Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad he hadnt quite closed bolt properly Mad Mad he opened then reshut bolt with Dad now in blue funk whispering instructions as to hinds position etc.Bang...no big boom as suppressor fitted Very Happy she went down like sack of poohs Very Happy I grabbed rifle but wasnt quite quick enough to get fawn aswell. (it should be big enough to survive ok as hinds were fawning nearly 2 months ago on farms)
we got down to hind all of 40 yards below us and Nathan administered lead disprin just incase she was having a headache from the heat. then big man hug time and out came the knife, cellphone to ring hunting Uncle and YES Bushy I got camera out too. Nathan wanted skin so we boned out front end and took back wheels intact with skin still on them (25+ kg load for Dad) we took about an hour to get the 2kms back to wagon and Nathan took back wheels aswell so he had whole deer on his back for the last bit over open ground.Yip Im a proud Dad its a memory I wont forget in a hurry and one of the few deer Ive seen someone else shoot.
and Slim the 150grn old school silver tip went in shoulder and forwards along spine through chest (just) spraying lung with schratnel before exiting out neck. Thanks again to all who helped me get loads sorted for the wee 7.62x39mm

just wondering: 30° C and no problem with all these nasty flies etc.? How do you handle that problem in such temperatures? When we shoot doves in summertime it would only take about half an hour in open air before they spoil your harvest...

by the way: both of you can be proud!

Good job Nathan.......You've made your dad a very proud man !!!

Just curious.....why such a big can for a little cartridge ???
Just a thought but maybe a thread on the use of a muffler would be nice.

Aloy..we got stuck in real fast to beat the flies. we carry old pillow cases to put meat in as we bone it out, and watched back wheels like a hawk when the old pack mule needed to stop for a breather.

Chambered...the Gunworks Spartan can I have fitted does duel duty on the .270 and does it well, if I bought one for just the 7.62 and fitted it muzzle forward eg screw on end like a .22 moderator yes I could go smaller but gun would be longer and defeat purpose, as it is the rifle is 1/2" shorter than it came from factory and weighs about 100grms more,to give me rifle that is similar sound to std .22lr when I use supersonic 2200fps loads and quieter than sneeze when using trailboss subsonics, with added benefit of next to no recoil at all. even the .270 with full power loads is down to .22mag sound and .223 recoil.

You got that guy trained! Good catch Nathan! I just love my 7.62x39, I bought a CZ bolt gun and it's light and accurate. So are you reloading or using store bought stuff. Would like to know how you're loading it.
