If the bolt was not in battery and stuck there you would not have gotten the upper apart as the BCG would be between the upper and the lower.

Dawgdad, that is the situation if one removes just the aft pin and expects the upper to pivot up (typical breakdown for BCG removal). If one removes both pins, the upper can slide forward a short distance and clear the BGC and lower. If the BCG is stuck half open, there is likely not sufficent room to do this. In this situation, I've had to remove the butt stock and buffer tube to clear the obstruction. I had to do this for a friend when the firing pin/cotter key were incorrectly installed and the firing pin fell out of the BCG with the rifle assembled.

Elvis, you may be right. However, I did have my son check with his Army armorer that handles gunsmithing for his platoon. He said he had no tools to handle this situation nor had he seen it before.

I may very well be red faced when I report back in a week or two after my next trip to the range.

Can you thread the rod and use a nut to pull the rod out?

If that primer goes off with the rod in front of the bullet the best that can happen is a split barrel.....

That sounds mighty stuck... something bad is going to happen, bulge it or split it. Make sure you video tape it... anyway it turns out will make for a good youtube video Very Happy

That's a good idea. Use a die and thread it as far as you can, stack washers under the nut and torque it out.

Paul, I didn't have a nut that fit the threads (no excuse for not going out and finding one). With the rod clamped in my 4" vice, the bullet was holding onto the rod with more force than I could clamp it with. However, I think the rod will help the siutation now. If the breech was closed, then I agree that the barrel would split. But with the breech open, I would think the extra weight of the rod would reduce how far the bullet went down the barrel and ensure the the case gets expelled from the breech. Plus I'm going to need the rod to knock the bullet back out the breech.

Yes, being able to torque the rod out, this surely would work. Then I might be able to reassemble and just shoot the round out and just have a stuck case, instead of a live round to deal with. But that powder charge has to be rather compressed, really compressed with all the banging that has been done to it trying to get the round dislodged from the chamber. I think I'd rather have not have the round locked in the breech when it goes off with me next to it. I'd rather have it go off with an open breech over a hundred feet away from me.

Thanks. Keep the thoughts coming. It helpful to think it through. If I can't get the round to go off, I think I'll just throw the barrel in a lake and let it sink to the bottom.

If you insist in firing that stuck round I would suggest a long string and a big oak to hide behind.

I gotta say, I'm not fond of the idea of trying to fire the cartridge to clear it. Hydraulic press maybe? With a shroud around the breech to catch anything that might blow off if it detonates ...

I'd read long ago, when I was looking at my first AR, about the "forward assist" idea. The author of that book said something to the effect of "If a round won't chamber do you really want to try to force it?"

Slim you may try a 50/50 mix of household white vinegar & 3% to 5% hydrogen peroxide and pour it into the barrel. Depends on the hardness of the lead, it will dissolve into a black soft goo.

I've used this method 2 times with muzzleloaders and worked both times for softening the bullet (30 to 60 minutes)so you can use the rod with screw extractor to yank the bullet out when you forget to add the powder.

Ok, looks like two votes that its going to detonate instead of a progressive powder burn when (if) the primer ignites.
