Pillow? Naw...That's the back of my very comfortable stool. The wear mark or hole if you will was and is made by my carry weapon.

Bushy, did you manage that with open sights or a scope?

My theory is its more prevalent with scopes.

On a more serious note: I replaced the metal diffuser support rods on my Chrony with wooden dowel, as hitting the metal rods will break things just as badly as a bullet in the thing's guts (no; I haven't done either......yet).

My shooting buddy killed his chronograph with a .45 Colt revolver once but we were able to resurrect it because it was just a glancing blow. I figure the card will keep my point of impact high enough to miss the chrony as long as I can still see the target through the sights, whatever they may be. I also think the problem is much more common when using a scope. I've talked to several guys who took shots with a clear line of sight through the scope but the line of flight was blocked. (Not including my tree...)

Ditto on the wooden dowels. Yes I can see scopes being the big problem as that 1.5 -2.0+ inches above bore is easily forgotten. I went with tape that can easily be seen with my scope dialed down. One of the guys at the range uses paper that is cut to the shape of the diffuser rods. He tapes it to them and it has a small black cross which he uses to aline it with rifle and butts. He doesn't worry about the target down range as he measures velocities first and then, after taking down the chrony, he shoots to test accuracy. He is real coy about what he is shooting but both rifles and cartridges look modified. I am sure the 22-250 shell he missed picking up one day was necked down to a smaller caibre.

To chrony manufacturers; design a laser alignment device that works like a garage door safety except it beeps when the light source, which is 1" below the bore of the rifle is aligned with the receiver which is 1" above the deck of the chrony and the chrony is perfectly aligned with the bore. Glen, sounds like a piece of cake for you to perfect and patent. :-)

I don't have a chrony. Just lick my finger, stick it up in the air and shoot. If my hair blows, at the shot, then I need to back off a bit. If I'm prone then I watch the dirt and grass, if it doesn't blow, at the shot, then I need to step it up a bit......works every time. No need for wooden dowels or packing tape either, don't have to shield anything from the sun or build any contraption, don't have to worry about shooting the wrong target or buyin a new one. Life is good. Dumb it down, it's the way of the future.
