Dont know a thing about it.. hate or love..
In Oz it got so ridiculous, for years now anything larger than 38 SPL need different category "genuine reason" to acquire.
I cannot dedicate enough time to satisfy the requirement so now, I cannot legally fire my .357 magnum in my SW 686 !!!
I am sure I will love the .40 if I could get my hands on them.

Geland, I started my life with a .44 RM
Many years ago the first real handgun I bought was a S&W Model 29 with a 8 3/8" barrel and Leupold optics. I had to show it at that time to the head of our local police and the only thing he said was: "You cannot hide that thing to carry it arround unseen"
And I would do that all over again when I'm asked, the only thing different would be the magnification of the Leupold. I had to chose between 2x and 4x. I took the 4x but I'm convinced now that the 2x would have been better.
Still have that first revolver and even now I think: why would I need a .40 when I have a .44?

because its the .40 S&W has more power than the other popular semi-automatic rounds and is much easier to conceal than your .44 side-iron.

Some people live in a country where consealed carrying is only allowed to the criminals...
and my revolver always deliver ALL the empty cases when I ask them... my HP and Gold Cup play hide and seek with those cases...

Vince,
A 357 MAG is indeed considered as larger than 38 SPL by local enforcement.
We have argued about this with the firearms inspector and police that visit the club checking license and safe keeping adherence.
Unfortunately we are talking to a brick wall.
I hear say that soon hunting caliber will be no larger than 8mm ..
I hope this wont happen...
Goddam stupid legislators.

So Gelandangan, are you allowed to shoot black powder? What caliber? How about the 44/40?
You have SW 686 and are not allowed to use .357 RM amno. What happens when you also buy a lever action in .357 RM?
or is this what they call "opening a can of wurms" ?

Here you're not allowed to own and use HP and fragmentating munition for a handgun, but when you have also a rifle in the same caliber... so my 586 compagnon is my Marlin in .357 RM. The Marlin is allowed for hunting rabbits, dove and foxes (but is a little bit low in energy for roedeer - according our law!) and I'm not allowed to use FMJ-bullets for hunting... so it's OK for me to buy these nice XTP's of Hornady because it's for hunting in my Marlin lever action.
I live in a country where every gun-owner is halve a lawyer

Gun laws in Australia is not uniform, nor it is clearly defined.
There are a lot of ambiguity that any minute deviations will ended up loosing your license or a lengthy and expensive court hearings.
Personally I rather comply with the law rather than get a lawyer to fight every step..
The idea they have is constriction until death
Make shooting laws impossible to comply with and you would have no shooter..
The bastards!!

Great concept Tremblay. But if I just miss slightly atleast the .45 will do a lot more damage. |
Sounds like my buddy. He always says that if he wants to shoot a 1/2 inch group at any distance he just fires one round out of his .50 cal Barrett!
I have to admit I've always had a particular fondness for the old .45 ACP. If for some reason I couldn't have one I certainly wouldn't feel under-gunned with the .40. I have shot a few and don't see that there is anything objectionable to them. I wouldn't dream of telling anyone that they just had to use a specific cartridge, but if asked for a recommendation... .45!
