finally dragged wallet out and bought some flash fandangled new projectiles to try out.
G.I. brass
winchester small rifle primer
AR2206h 25.25grains
zastava mini mauser 1 in 12" twist
fired one into four milk jugs
1st jug neat in hole large out hole 2" sized
2nd jug 3" in hole small out hole
3rd small in and out and jug split
4th small in and out hole
5th Embarassed

wasnt there so didnt catch projectile...will have to drink some more milk to get a longer line of water...thought 12" would have stopped it but nope Sad

fired four into block of blue gum so could see grouping at 100yards..called first shot low and rest good was aiming at knot and group hit high as expected/should be.

How hard is blue gum? The bullets don't seem to have lost any petals. I will be interested what they look like caught in the water jugs. I use TSX in 308 but passed for the 223 anything that might hold together so well that it would be a ricochet danger. Then again I am only shooting coyotes.

Mac, blue gum is a hardwood mate...in fact all of the eucalypts are hardwood...some extremely hard (Yellow Box, Ironbark, Karri, Jarrah). Jarrah is pretty much the hardest wood I have ever tried using...I couldn't drive a 4 inch nail all the way into it...the nail would bend at about the 2 inch mark.

Many years ago I worked weekends with a timber cutter. Yellow Box was the preferred wood for slow combustion wood stoves and you would usually get 1 to 2 trees out of a chain on the chainsaw.

Nice, Elvis. I'm surprised they mushroomed so well and you didn't lose any pedals. LOL, you only need one jug of water, Elvis, and a stack of magazines in a box behind it to catch the bullet. Works every time.

I believe that these new copper(cu) bullets should be advertised and or sold as controlled expanding and should list working velocities and ranges for use on types of game.To me just by looking at the pics-this bullet of Elvis's is darn near armor piercing if it only expands when shot into a hardwood.I believe that I would go with a varmint grenade,or something with quicker expansion on small/thin skinned game.

TRBLSHTR thats why I got them for big animals to penertrate. re read what it did to milk jugs of water...max energy loss in the first 3" ..so just inside front shoulder.....but should poke small hole out other side.
for small stuff I will happily continue to use the cup n core that work so well

TRBLSHTR, the cooper bullet makers, Barnes, Hornday, Nosler, GS Custom, all are very clear on how their bullets function. I have hunted and done extensive terminal performance testing with these bullets as well as lead-core bullets. You can see some of this testing on this formum and also at the link below. These all-copper bullets have impressive and rapid expansion, usually in the first 2". On the elk I have shot they are fully expanded by the time they have penetrated the near-side ribcage. Their penetratation is superior to lead-core bullets because they retain 99+% of their weight after expansion. When manfactuers report a minimum opening velocity (usually 1800 to 2100 fps), it is usually for their most common caliber, typcially .308. The problem is velocity is not the parameter that determine minimum expansion, its kinetic energy - it takes "work" to open up th bullet. A good example of this is Nosler advertizes their AccuBond Long Range has a minimum opening velocity of 1300 fps. This is valid for their .308 bullet. However, the 150 gr .270 AB LR has a minium expansion velocity of 1500 fps, basically the same kinetic energy of the heavier .308 bullet.

An example and comparison I have (sorry no pics)
Well a rough comparison with a 7-08 used for getting some meat animals
Number 1 was a goat head shot with 120grn TSX at about 50 metres. Mates comment "what the hell did you hit that with" effects were devastating
Number 2 was a young Rusa stag head shot with a 140grn Woodliegh at about 50 metres, pin holed.
I know the 140's were going slower, I just expected more expansion.

I have had great luck with the Barnes TSX .223's in 62 and 70 grain in the AR . They shot very well and had great performance.

The 140gr Woodliegh is a lead-core bullet. When I was exploring the benefits of ballistic tips, I found out the expansion cavity design of the Barnes TSX, albeit small and without a tip, is one of the most effective on the market. Lots of picture here in this link showing bullet expansion.
