Picked up a Mossberg 100 ATR from a buddy in .270 win for my niece as a first hunting rifle. Is anyone familiar with these rifles and what is your opinion on them? I have had mossberg shotguns and loved them but never a bolt rifle.

Not familiar with the 100 but I do have a older mossberg mod # 340 BA in .22 that I have had for 30 + years that does very well..

While I can't speak to the quality or accuracy of today's Mossberg rifles due to lack of experience with them, I did have a Mossberg Model 800 bolt action varmint rifle (heavy barrel) in 22/250 many years ago. It was very accurate and well made. Not even sure why I traded it off, other than one of those sudden urges to get something else. I'm sure you and your niece will enjoy your purchase.

Stovey has one and likes it a lot. They have a barrel nut system like a Savage. Mossberg seems to be doing well with this product and I have heard only positive comments. 270 is a great caliber.

I appreciate the info. I have had 3 mossberg shotguns and love them. I have a bolt action 12 gauge which is not bad but the ones I really lover are my .410 bolt action, it has a nice long barrel and a real tight choke so it has great range. I use it for grouse hunting. The other was a very nice pump action model 500, it was an extremely nice shotgun, nice finish on the wood and it was a hell of a lot of fun to shoot. The pump was a 12 gauge also. Sure wish I still had it.

I took her out yesterday just to see what the recoil would be like for her. We were not really checking the pattern or if it needed sited in since we do not have a lot of ammo right now. Going to get some after the holiday. Anyhow, I set up some targets (bottles, coffee can, a large piece of wood, and a golf ball sitting on the top of a bottle) so that they created a large area so we knew the gun was hitting something around 50 yards out. She wanted me to shoot first so I did. For the hell of it I aimed for the golf ball and fired, the damn thing flew off the bottle and landed about 40 yards back. I checked it out and I blew a hole right through it. She then shot at the golf ball and hit it on one side and followed up with a second shot hitting the other side. The golf ball had three holes in it at this point and only three shots were fired. She shot a fourth time and hit the wood right next to where the golf ball was set each time. I was very impressed considering I did not have to site in the gun. It was a real mild shoot, in fact I had a .243 some years ago that kicked harder than the .270, albeit a ultralight rifle. Next time we will take it out to do some fine tuning and check the pattern. I asked her what she thought of the recoil and evidently she was not bothered by it one bit.

tlo7mm, that is great! Not sure what ammunition you are shooting but I've chrony the Remington 130 CoreLoks and they are in the 2600 fps range if I remember correctly - very mild compared to my reloads at 3100 fps. You might find other factory ammo more recoil like Hornady's Superformance. Even the 110 TTSXs at 3450 fps have stout recoil so I installed a LimbSaver. My Tikka T3 Lite weights in a tad over 6 pounds - nice to carry in the field but makes for more felt recoil.

great stuff...and true about factory ammo Slimjim, that said those said same rem loads kill well inside 200 yards...I would shy away from 150grn factory for now as the recoil jump is large.
