I started reloading about two months ago, and started using this computer about two weeks ago... so bear with me. I have always shot factory 55gr moly coated hornady v-max through my old 77v 220 swift. I worked up a handload using the same bullets that groups alittle smaller than an inch@100. I was recently told that the true accuracy of the moly bullets will be found after 15 rounds and that i should NEVER clean the gun. This goes against everything i have read and I clean this gun religiously after 10 rounds. Supposidly the barrel gets a nice "molycoat" after the 15 rounds and to clean the gun before defeats the purpose of using these bullets. I have been reading these forums and some of you guys seem to know your poop, so any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.........also this one of the best websites i have found... good work.

Don't know anything about molycoated bullets other than what I've heard.
Heard that load for load they are a little slower than non-coated bullets. Don't know if this is true or not, perhaps there is someone on the forum that does have the correct answer. Have fun with your handloading and shooting.--tr

I know there are folks that swear by them, but I have never shot them in any of my guns, and I never will. I have shot the Fail Safes which are coated, but with a different coating than moly. Do a search on the subject and you will find a lot of discussion about the pro's and con's. I've read enough to know I don't need to try them. Just my opinion.

www.6mmbr.com/normamoly.html

Primarily extends barrel life and reduce fouling so you don't have pressure swing from copper fouling. You don't need to clean it as often. I haven't notice much difference in accuracy.
There are some concerns about moly attracting moisture to some barrel types. I would always clean my barrel, after I have finished shooting for the day but I have put up to 50 rounds through a rifle using moly bullets and had as tight of group at the end as at the start.

It is messy and it is hard to get out of a barrel.

That last line you said probrobly sums up the reason I wont touch coated bullets. As well as the concerens of barrel moister. Smile

I use them in my 22-250 and have no moisture problems at all and accuracy is just as good as any other bullet. I haven't noticed any diff in velocity. I don't have a problem with moly bullets but I have only used them in my 22-250 nothing else.

Midway (and others) have moly based bore pretreatments that I always use after cleaning. Rifles vary but using the pretreatment, I find the number of fouling rounds to be about the same as when shooting non-moly coated bullets.

I use moly coated bullets mainly to allow more shots between cleaning so I spend my range time shooting, not cleaning. I do not buy into the claims that moly is a miracle substance nor a tool of the devil as the zealots on both sides of the issue preach.

Thanx for all the input. I think I will continue to shoot them in the swift (I have another box) but will stick with the uncoated 75gr. v-max in my 6mm. These shoot fine, and are hell on the yotes.... The more I get into this reloading I'm reminded of the acronym K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. A good friend of mine has reloaded for many years, and laughs at me for buying coated bullets and the " ones with the funny plastic tips". thanx again and I'm sure I'll have more questions.
