Paul,
The major reason is the fear of polluting an important tourist area, lots of rotting stuff, chemicals and left over oil/ fuel , a few bodies etc, even the paint on it.
The NIMBY effect ( not in my backyard) also had a bit to do with it.
That and the punishing effect of forcing the company to recover it, may ensure that accidents like this one wont happen again. Maybe next time the captain will go down with the ship, instead of leading from the front straight into the nearest life boat.

They say it has been raised. Actually it was just uprighted. It still is sunk and sitting on a platform they built.

Very interesting to see the impression in the side of the ship of the two ledges it rolled over on. It certainly was percariously positioned.

In nautical terms, Bravo Zulu to the salvage crew!
