As ya'll know I love this new 12ga pump (aka- "TANK") for bustin' clays and there's nothing like going toe to toe with the big boys and their double guns while I'm shuckin' corn crackin' pairs, it's a wicked challenge.

I shot it well out of the box but devoloped a nasty flinch as the stock butt pad was really leaving welts and the gun was pretty light @ 7.5# using standard 1-1/8oz loads. Consequently my scores went in the toilet. Sad

So I got ahold of my good freinds @ C&H Research, I've used their stuff before and it WORKS. Really- their stuff honestly works, and, if ya don't like iit ya git yer money back from the old guy- no hassle.

I installed the Old Standby 8oz mercury filled stock weight with tape around it, backed it up with some tape wraped dowel and tried it with a Declerator slip-on (note on that- it has a 'speed-insert' in the heel, a hard plastic bit for no-snag mount. I had to remove it as I could not chance that smaking the screws in my new shoulder, then, back filed it with black silicone and gave it a textured look). Same added a tick of LOP, but not much, maybe 1/32". So no big there. Plus the weigh in the butt up close to the tang added balance, at least for me. It was super nose heavy. Now it's more centered and shucks just as slick. (this is the second slickest pump ever!)

Man it worked a treat with standard loads. But the dowel slipped out a hair after one round w/ that soft backed pad (if you use a hard based pad you won't need to go through all this- a smidge of E-tape on device and dowel, pound it home, reinstall the pad. Done).

So I re-installed it with more tape (black line around dowel) and included 2, 1/2" long 5/16" dia. machinist set screws, with, one drop of Gorilla Glue in each hole for insurance. Sanded it all flat and hit the range.

After a hundred rounds it's holding, and, removing it is a breeze should I desire to. Back out the set screws, put a screw in the dowle and yank, and the device has a 1/4" x 28 hole so a bolt goes in that and yank that out too...done!

I also switched to 2-3/4 dram 1oz loads @ 1180fps. It now shoots as soft as a 20ga almost! Cool I can honestly say the felt slap was reduced by at least 40%, the abuse is totally gone. Zero pain. None. It's now an all day shooter.
I shot some rounds of American Trap and it felt good. Then for doubles, right off the bat I busted 4 pairs straight- then the trap machine broke! Rats! Mad

Flinch is gone and I'm back in love with the fancy-pants trombone Mossberg, my odd-ball on the doubles range. Boom-chak-chak-Boom! Razz

If you are insterested in recoil reduction or less abuse on the range I cannot recommend C&H Research's stuff enough. It truly works big time, in all 3 firearms I tried his stuff in.

Happy Crackin' everyone! Very Happy

hmmmm the 3" 1 1/8th oz steel loads do have a sharp boot to them... I may just have to try adding some weight up the but plate and see what happens.

Yeh I know it turned out great! Hey thanks boys for all the nice words!!!

Confused

Sissy? Come chukar hunting with me sometime. See who starts whining first!

You guys are funny. I aint no stranger to recoil. 300mag and .308W from the bench/prone aint a .50BMG but it aint a .22lr!

This pump was harsh due to a couple reasons and the rubber pad never came in like I thought it would. It just plain beat me and my new shoulder up after 125 rounds. So I fixed it! Now it don't!

I'd test drive Bertha, after a few shots of Jack and a handfull of Vicodin! Otherwise? Uh, hmm...maybe?

Steels fast. It stings! I think the weight made the biggest difference. Granted it uses intertia to further damp it, but I added 8oz. and that's a lot. I was gona just pound some 240gr SWC's into a 3/4" pipe into the shape of a cylinder then shove that in the stock hole with tape around it et. al., but...I had the cash so I went with the mercury filled damper.

Stovey, it was just to keep you sharp Smile
I admit that I myself had these problems with an FN Auto-5 in cal. 20. In the beginning I couldn't believe it, but when I put it on the scales and it was only about 5 pounds... I just put such a rubber over-cap on the stock and now it's very fine equipment for doves.
I guess when you grow older, some parts lose their sensitivity and other parts become more sensitive... Smile

Yup! My Ultralight 20g is 5# on the snout. With 1oz HV steel loads and that hanky for a butt-pad and a bony shouldler with screws in it? Jeebus!

I got a C&H Reaserch mercury filled magazine cap. Took all the sting outa that lil hunny. Shoots like a 410 now and it's like cheating w/ multiple birds or targets.

found a piece of alloy tent pole just the right diameter to slot nicely up the buttstock of the H&R pump, insulation taped one end and filled with lead shot and stoppered the other end with a piece of screwed up foam rubber which fits very snuggly under but plate. added 8oz of weight for $0 Very Happy Very Happy
balance seems great unloaded so should be good with a full tube. 10 more restless nights to go...roll on 06;45 on the 4th of may Laughing Laughing
then I get to see how much it tames the beast Laughing

Elvis, if you melt the lead shots, you can get in a few more oz.
IT will be even nicer on recoils.
