As ya'll know I love this new 12ga pump (aka- "TANK") for bustin' clays and there's nothing like going toe to toe with the big boys and their double guns while I'm shuckin' corn crackin' pairs, it's a wicked challenge.
I shot it well out of the box but devoloped a nasty flinch as the stock butt pad was really leaving welts and the gun was pretty light @ 7.5# using standard 1-1/8oz loads. Consequently my scores went in the toilet.
So I got ahold of my good freinds @ C&H Research, I've used their stuff before and it WORKS. Really- their stuff honestly works, and, if ya don't like iit ya git yer money back from the old guy- no hassle.
I installed the Old Standby 8oz mercury filled stock weight with tape around it, backed it up with some tape wraped dowel and tried it with a Declerator slip-on (note on that- it has a 'speed-insert' in the heel, a hard plastic bit for no-snag mount. I had to remove it as I could not chance that smaking the screws in my new shoulder, then, back filed it with black silicone and gave it a textured look). Same added a tick of LOP, but not much, maybe 1/32". So no big there. Plus the weigh in the butt up close to the tang added balance, at least for me. It was super nose heavy. Now it's more centered and shucks just as slick. (this is the second slickest pump ever!)
Man it worked a treat with standard loads. But the dowel slipped out a hair after one round w/ that soft backed pad (if you use a hard based pad you won't need to go through all this- a smidge of E-tape on device and dowel, pound it home, reinstall the pad. Done).
So I re-installed it with more tape (black line around dowel) and included 2, 1/2" long 5/16" dia. machinist set screws, with, one drop of Gorilla Glue in each hole for insurance. Sanded it all flat and hit the range.
After a hundred rounds it's holding, and, removing it is a breeze should I desire to. Back out the set screws, put a screw in the dowle and yank, and the device has a 1/4" x 28 hole so a bolt goes in that and yank that out too...done!
I also switched to 2-3/4 dram 1oz loads @ 1180fps. It now shoots as soft as a 20ga almost!
I can honestly say the felt slap was reduced by at least 40%, the abuse is totally gone. Zero pain. None. It's now an all day shooter.
I shot some rounds of American Trap and it felt good. Then for doubles, right off the bat I busted 4 pairs straight- then the trap machine broke! Rats!
Flinch is gone and I'm back in love with the fancy-pants trombone Mossberg, my odd-ball on the doubles range. Boom-chak-chak-Boom!
If you are insterested in recoil reduction or less abuse on the range I cannot recommend C&H Research's stuff enough. It truly works big time, in all 3 firearms I tried his stuff in.
Happy Crackin' everyone!
