This is asinine, Cullerton was born and raised in Chicago so I don't expect level headed thinking by the Chicago political machine. What in the world don't these people understand about the latest ILL appeals court ruling on ccw as well as the SCOTUS McDonald v. Chicago case?

Illinois political machine may have lit the fuse if this law passes.

It will be interesting to watch Chicago style politics in action. The news has been quite the last few days. This will stir things up again. Doubt it will do anything to the Chicago homicide rate.

It seems to me that the anti-gun people are doing their best to create a "Concord Bridge" moment somewhere in the US while they think they have the power. It remains to be seen how many gun owners will submit and how many will fight. PLEASE write your representatives, local, state and national, and tell them where you stand.

How will they know who has guns?
How will they enforce this new law before the NRA presses legal action?

The best they can do if it does pass is to get their guns out of state to a friend until this is resolved. I'd love to know who spoke to Cullerton from the Whitehouse and told him to push this through so we can see the reaction.

Quite simple: they give you time to register your guns, so that after that date they can legally confiscate your guns + present you a nasty bill when you own not properly registrated guns (in Belgium you risk a penalty of 25 000 euros!)
When most guns are registrated, you'll get a review every 5 year to see that you still forfill all the reasons to own these guns. You'll have a shooting book to register how many times you visit the shooting ranch (which will become very expensive because so many people are forced to become member). Every year you have to ask for a paper that you did visit your ranch enough times and that you're allowed to shoot there the calibers you own.

We smiled at the British when they lost their rifles, but they were still payed (a little) for what was confiscated. We see here in Belgium that they just grab them and throw them in an oven without any compensation for your losses, all in the name of a safer society.

I hope you all realise what's coming to you now and praise your fathers they put that 2-nd commandment where it's not so easely removed. You should shout even harder right now. You have 1 big advantage: when OB tries to split your country in 2 and the non-gun-owners will be in conflict with the gun-owners, I know what side I want to be. Never forget that's no harm to fight new laws when these are in conflict with the old ones that already have been proven to be very good!

Don't let bad advertising to put you all into sleep!

Sage words Aloys.

We have already suffered these losses in Australia because of an emotional decision made by a gun hating politician.

DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU GUYS OVER THERE!!!

I don't see the current movement to disarm Americans as a reaction to the tragedy of Newtown, CT. Newtown is the excuse to further part of an agenda that has been in the works since the fifties. Yes our side lost the election and under normal circumstances that would be enough for us to bide our time and hope for the best in the next election. The problem is that we lost the election due to the overloading of our system by this government which sought to create as many dependent voters as possible. Those voters, those useful idiots, voted to keep big government in control. The voters get their freebees and the government retains more and more power over us. Disarming citizens has always been sought by those wishing to promote big government. This is done under the guise of social justice. Social justice sounds benign enough. Heck who isn't for justice? But when you add on social to the term, it becomes something more. It becomes socialism! We need to fight this tooth and nail or our rights may not last to see the next election.

Illinois has a wonderful little thing in place known as the FOID. Firearms Owners Identification Card. In order to buy a gun or ammunition in Illinois and to carry a gun while hunting or at a shooting range, you must have an FOID. They do not keep track of what guns or how many you have but they know who has them. BATF has all of the FFL transferred guns on their record. You better have a bill of sale for any gun you no no longer have too.

This does not account for the private transfers of weapons purchased prior to 1968 and the like but many people have ATF sheets filed on most of their guns.

I doubt many police officers would volunteer for that duty.

that FOID sure sounds familiar for a start. Here things started with a registration form when somebody bought a new rifle. For handguns one already needed a permit in advance for many years, but rifles and shotguns only asked for registration and this without any further control afterwards. This papers all entered our CWR (Central Weapons Registration) where they should have been properly registered... but when I tell you they gave a number instead of the caliber and even they didn't specify enough calibers... then you understand why Mickey Mouse was a registered weapon owner here in Belgium according to our CWR.
Even now they still hire people that don't know anything about guns to do such registration "to keep them completely objective"... and now everything is going its own way. Altough we have separation between religion, politics and justice, some in our administration act as if they can translate the law according to their own needs. So in some parts of Belgium (only in the flemish speaking North!) administration made extra lists and demands on their own, such as "Rambo-weapons" or "barrel too short to shoot competition" ...

so again: block it while you still can because if some people get some powers they tend to fall upstairs and will try to tiranize all others in the name of taking no risks while improving the safety of society.

Look at Great-Brittain were they already started to try to ban pointed kitchen knives... but on the other hand they are giving more weapons to their police. In the past when their citizens were still allowed to posses fire-arms, there was little armed police and just have a look at the changes now.

Unbelievable, these bills passed the committee late this afternoon and are now on their way to a vote. They have both bills available for viewing and if they pass the vote, it will mean a ban all semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns as well as pump action shotguns. wtf
